Drivers in Tauranga are being advised of ongoing road changes in the city\u2019s western corridor as a major intersection upgrade continues.<\/p>\n
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi has warned that disruption is likely as work progresses on long-term improvements at the State Highway 29 and Cambridge Rd intersection as part of the Tauriko enabling works project.<\/p>\n
In a Facebook post, the agency said the upgrade would expand the lanes along SH29 and add new turning bays.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re upgrading the State Highway 29 (SH29) and Cambridge Road intersection as part of the Tauriko Enabling Works,\u201d the post read.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it\u2019s complete, SH29 will have four lanes plus turning bays for Cambridge Road. Cambridge Road will have two right\u2011turn bays and one left\u2011turn bay onto SH29.”<\/p>\n
Parts of Cambridge Rd have already been widened to make space for the future changes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe upgraded intersection, complete with traffic signals, is expected to open in 2027.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Tauriko works include a new intersection on SH29 at Tauriko village, designed to provide access to the northern part of the future Tauriko West development.<\/p>\n
The project also involves widening SH29 between the new village intersection and Cambridge Rd, with space for a walking and cycling path along the northern side of the highway.<\/p>\n
At the existing SH29 and Cambridge Rd intersection, upgrades include new traffic signals and a new connection to Whiore Ave restricted to buses, pedestrians and cyclists.<\/p>\n
Further works include a new footpath along the southern side of Whiore Ave, and space for future bus stops.<\/p>\n
NZTA said additional transport infrastructure will be delivered in stages, including new bus stops and a protected on-road, two-way cycle lane between the SH29\/Cambridge Rd intersection and Taurikura Drive.<\/p>\n
It will be introduced once the housing development in Tauriko West progresses and demand increases.<\/p>\n
A new roundabout is also planned at the SH29 and Redwood Lane intersection, linking to the Tauriko Business Estate via Kaweroa Drive and providing access to the southern part of Tauriko West via Redwood Lane.<\/p>\n
