The current features of Neptune\u2019s system support this scenario, and its seven inner moons appear to be <a href=\"https:\/\/ui.adsabs.harvard.edu\/abs\/2025epsc.conf..181D\/abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">leftovers<\/a> of this ancient clash.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav99400063b668kxnoi6h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But now, new research using data from the James Webb Space Telescope suggests that one object might have been entirely spared from the chaos.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav99400073b66v92xtdoh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think Nereid is the only intact survivor of this process,\u201d said Matthew Belyakov, a graduate student in planetary science at the California Institute of Technology and first author of a study on the subject <a href=\"http:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.aeb1429\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">published Wednesday<\/a> in the journal Science Advances.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav99400083b66p7ejrvxq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe other survivors are Neptune\u2019s innermost moons, but they are not intact because we have images of them from Voyager, and they look like disrupted rubble piles. So they are surviving material from the initial system, but not fully intact moons.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav99500093b660lqixs8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This hypothesis would upend previous assumptions that Nereid was, much like Triton and a few other Neptunian moons, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aanda.org\/articles\/aa\/full_html\/2020\/06\/aa36672-19\/aa36672-19.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">captured<\/a> Kuiper Belt object, as the new James Webb data revealed that Nereid\u2019s composition doesn\u2019t match what scientists know about Kuiper Belt objects.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000b3b669u84sznu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Astronomers don\u2019t know a lot about Nereid, because it is faint and distant from Earth and the sun. The only image scientists have of it is a blurry photo taken in 1989 by NASA\u2019s Voyager 2 spacecraft during its brief fly-by of Neptune. Nereid is the outermost of Neptune\u2019s known moons, and it has one of the most eccentric (meaning noncircular) orbits in the solar system. It takes <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/neptune\/moons\/nereid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">360 Earth days<\/a> for the moon to complete one lap around Neptune.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779315074_234_nereid-browse-732x520.jpg\" alt=\"Voyager 2's photo of Nereid, taken in 1989 during the space probe's flyby of Neptune.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"520\" width=\"732\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000c3b6611pg7mpf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Named after the sea nymphs of Greek mythology, Nereid is believed to be around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Nereid-astronomy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">210 miles<\/a> (338 kilometers) in diameter. Even if it\u2019s part of an original set of moons that Neptune had shortly after its formation, about 4.5 billion years ago, it\u2019s difficult to speculate what that system might have looked like, according to Belyakov. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of anyone\u2019s guess what was there before Triton,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000d3b667bsxywqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just like Triton, Nereid is an irregular satellite, a class of objects whose orbits are inclined, backward or distant from their host, suggesting they were captured by their host and previously orbited the sun independently.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000e3b66juvzjpmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But even among irregular satellites, Nereid is an outlier, Belyakov said. \u201cIt\u2019s twice as big in diameter as the next largest one, which is Phoebe around Saturn, and it\u2019s not all that distant from its host planet compared to a lot of the other irregular satellites.\u201d Some of Nereid\u2019s features, he added, have long made some astronomers doubt the moon\u2019s Kuiper Belt origin.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000f3b66gh6lxt98@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A 10-minute and 40-second observation commissioned for the study and made using James Webb\u2019s infrared capabilities, which can reveal the composition of a distant object, gives credence to those doubts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000g3b66bave9mja@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhat we found was an object that was highly water-rich on the surface, brighter than a lot of Kuiper Belt objects, and with some presence of CO2,\u201d Belyakov said. \u201cThe overall signature was more similar to that of regular satellites around Uranus rather than Kuiper Belt objects.\u201d  The results were compared with data from 54 Kuiper Belt bodies, also from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stsci.edu\/jwst-program-info\/program\/?program=2418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">James Webb observations<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000h3b661l34x41w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Belyakov and his colleagues then performed computer simulations to test whether the hypothesis of Nereid as part of an original moon system would stand true. \u201cWhat we found in our simulations is that in the cases where Triton survives, rather than get destroyed or kicked into Neptune,\u201d Belyakov said, \u201caround 25% of the time one or more moons can survive the Triton encounter on distant orbits.\u201d That number compares favorably  to the chances of Nereid being a captured object instead, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000i3b664124sey9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In this scenario, in the first 100 million or 200 million years of solar system history, Triton would have slammed into the Neptunian system, colliding with a number of the original moons. But Nereid would have been spared and sent on an eccentric orbit instead. The event would have also slowed down Triton\u2019s own eccentric orbit and put it in its current path, closer to Neptune.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000j3b66b0mbq9by@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI think people have already wanted this to be true,\u201d Belyakov said about Nereid\u2019s possible new origin story. \u201cNow we can start the actual science feedback loop. There is more data to be gathered for Nereid compositionally that can help us really talk through the formation of the Neptunian system, and if we treat Nereid as a regular satellite, maybe that can tell us a lot about how satellites form around ice giants.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000k3b66m95gelmb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Further James Webb observations can help, but the final word on what Nereid really looks like would require a mission to Neptune. At the moment, none is planned, and <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/neptune\/exploration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Voyager 2<\/a>, launched in 1977, is the only spacecraft to have studied the system.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779315074_495_voyager-20260520142721511.jpg\" alt=\"Voyager 2 is the only spacecraft to have visited Uranus and Neptune.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"900\" width=\"1600\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000m3b66c38rv823@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new study is a lovely and simple examination of how the Neptunian moon system became the way it looks today, according to Carolyn Porco, an American planetary scientist who worked on NASA\u2019s Voyager and Cassini missions and was not involved with the new study.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000n3b66di2rlx1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is Triton that was the captured body and it subsequently caused havoc, gravitationally scattering Neptune\u2019s original moons hither and thither but mostly out of Neptune orbit,\u201d Porco wrote in an email. \u201cThe authors show it is plausible that Nereid lucked out by remaining in orbit around Neptune but at a much larger distance than Triton. This would explain why its composition observed by James Webb does not match that of the bodies in the Kuiper Belt.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000o3b66lyuvi5u2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            James Webb is once again showing its tremendous power as a solar system explorer, said Leigh Fletcher, a professor at the School of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Leicester in England who also did not participate in the work.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000p3b66cngrlcj5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve long known there\u2019s something special about Neptune\u2019s collection of moons, having been severely disrupted by the arrival of Triton and other satellites captured by Neptune\u2019s gravity over the years,\u201d Fletcher  wrote in an email. \u201cGiven those destructive processes, I don\u2019t think we expected to see anything left of Neptune\u2019s original satellite system, other than rubble and debris.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpeav995000q3b66s7j5k8tf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But James Webb data shows otherwise, and more work with the telescope could reveal finer scale features and maybe strengthen the case for Nereid as an original satellite, he added. \u201cIt\u2019s a compelling idea, and something that can certainly be tested with future JWST observations, and hopefully with an ambitious future mission to the Neptune system.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/editor-note\/instances\/cmpeb7aqd00003b6rleig3fia@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"editor-note\" class=\"editor-note-elevate vossi-editor-note_elevate inline-placeholder \" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n    Sign up for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/newsletters\/wonder-theory?source=nl-acq_article\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN\u2019s Wonder Theory science newsletter<\/a>.
