Helmet<\/a> were formed in New York City in 1989 by former Band of Susans member and jazz guitarist prodigy Page Hamilton.<\/p>\n

He recruited bassist Henry Bogdan, guitarist Peter Mengede and drummer John Stanier and the quartet quickly earned a reputation in Lower East Side punk dives for their punishing, riff-driven live shows. The group signed to Amphetamine Reptile Records, with whom they released the abrasive single Born Annoying and their full-length debut, 1990’s Strap It On, but it was with their major label debut Meantime<\/a> (1992) that they truly made their mark on the alt-rock landscape. To date, the album has sold over 2 million copies worldwide.<\/p>\n

The band have endured numerous line-up changes since the release of 1997’s Aftertaste \u2013 after which they disbanded for several years \u2013 and only band leader Hamilton remains from the original line-up. But as 2023’s acclaimed Left<\/a> album proves, as long as Hamilton retains his hunger, Helmet will continue to bite. Hard.<\/p>\n

9. Monochrome (2006)<\/p>\n

From the opening savage bursts of Swallowing Everything, it\u2019s clear that Hamilton was attempting to recapture the sound of their earlier output.<\/p>\n

Wharton Tiers, who worked on their 1990 debut Strap It On and its 1992 follow-up Meantime, was drafted in to co-produce the album and even used the same tape machine for another layer of authenticity.<\/p>\n

The band’s third album working as a trio \u2013 bassist Chris Traynor and drummer Mike Jost alongside Hamilton \u2013 Monochrome has all the pummelling riffs you\u2019d expect, particularly on Brand New and 410, with some respite offered on the mellower title-track and the swing of On Your Way Down. Not a bad album \u2013 far from it \u2013 but, given Helmet’s high standards, their least essential work.<\/p>\n

8. Seeing Eye Dog (2010)<\/p>\n

In the years following Monochrome, Page Hamilton added \u201cweird guitar stuff\u201d to several movie soundtracks before working on his band’s seventh studio album.<\/p>\n

Of the band\u2019s most ‘recent’ output, it\u2019s one of their heavier releases: So Long, Welcome to Algiers, Miserable and the title track all bear the hallmarks of Helmet\u2019s crunching oeuvre.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not all pummelling riffs, mind. Hamilton’s work on movie soundtracks clearly informed the textured, atmospheric Morphing and there\u2019s a fairly straight cover of And Your Bird Can Sing from The Beatles<\/a>\u2019 1966 album Revolver.<\/p>\n

7. Dead To The World (2016)
Dead to the World was Helmet’s first studio album in six years. The relentless aggression that informed their earlier work had all but faded. The heavy riffs remain, but are cloaked in a jagged alt-rock sensibility shot through with a pop nous. <\/p>\n

Bad News soars with bold, chiming guitars and the title track echoes Soulwax’s 1998 cult masterpiece Much Against Everyone’s Advice before Hamilton underpins it with his unmistakable guitar tones. Elvis Costello and The Attractions’ Green Shirt \u2013 taken from the Scouse singer\/songwriter’s 1979 album Armed Forces \u2013 is handled carefully, while Drunk in the Afternoon is as woozy as its title suggests. Of the 11 tracks on offer, Die Alone will most satisfy old school fans with its heft, jazz-inflected solo and spit-flecked vocal delivery. <\/p>\n

Like a packet of Revels, this is very much a mixed bag of styles and flavours, but still quite moreish.<\/p>\n

6. Aftertaste (1997)
After touring Betty, guitarist Rob Echeverria left to join Biohazard, leaving the band to continue as a trio. Aided by producer and Barkmarket frontman Dave Sardy, Page had one simple aim for their fourth full-length: to make “the Helmet-est Helmet album\u201d. <\/p>\n

While some of the experimental touches which characterised Betty have been stripped away, this 1997 album certainly ticks all the boxes. Insatiable and Crisis King could be taken from the Meantime sessions, while the sheer weight of the material hits the sweet spot between Strap It On and Betty. What makes Aftertaste stand out is the emphasis on the vocals and hooks, particularly on the soaring Driving Nowhere and the contemptuous Broadcast Emotion, where Page sneers \u201cYou love the sound of your own voice.\u201d <\/p>\n

While it was regarded as a commercial dud compared to its predecessor, Aftertaste still stands up. Sadly, it would be the last Helmet album to feature the killer rhythm section of John Stanier and Henry Bodgan, with the group calling it quits following a show in Italy in 1997. <\/p>\n

It would be seven years before Hamilton would revive his new-look band.<\/p>\n

5. Left (2023)
Seven years after the release of 2016\u2019s Dead to the World, Helmet returned with their ninth studio album. Whereas their previous release had the power of a shove in a crowded bar, Left has all the heft of a battering ram. The riffs are taut and substantial, and the songwriting recalls the New Yorkers at their mid ’90s commercial peak. <\/p>\n

Opener Holiday drips with spite \u2013 \u201cTongue tip, you dipshit, asshat, fuckwit\u201d \u2013 while Bombastic has the swing of a wrecking ball. Reprise offers some respite wrapped in neat bursts of atmospheric post-rock before the sparse verses of Dislocated shows that Helmet can be just as heavy without a barrage of riffs. The closer Resolution tips its hat to Page Hamilton\u2019s jazz roots, offering a truncated take on a passage taken from John Coltrane\u2019s classic A Love Supreme. <\/p>\n

In short, this is the sound of a band rejuvenated.<\/p>\n

4. Size Matters (2004)<\/p>\n

Hamilton’s former band mates declined the offer to rejoin Helmet when he restarted Helmet in 2004. His new charges would include Orange 9mm guitarist Chris Traynor on bass, and White Zombie drummer John Tempesta.<\/p>\n

Crashing Foreign Cars might retain the crunch of early Helmet, but the main difference is the heft which shapes much of the fifth full-length. Largely inspired by Hamilton\u2019s relationship with Winona Ryder, songs like Enemies, Everybody Loves You, See You Dead and Throwing Punches were re-recorded versions of songs from abandoned post-Helmet project Gandhi.<\/p>\n

Despite the personnel changes, it\u2019s still Helmet \u2013 albeit with a different sheen.<\/p>\n

3. Strap It On (1990)
Helmet\u2019s debut seven-inch Born Annoying was an all-out attack on the senses: unrelenting distorted guitars, jackhammer drums, and drill sergeant vocals. There was no light and dark, just a full-on swirl of anger fed through a wall of amps. Their full-length debut Strap It On emerged two years later through Amphetamine Reptile, and showed off a band with a clutch of songs benefiting from experience and a laser-guided focus.<\/p>\n

Often characterised by Hamilton’s barked vocal delivery, precise, down-tuned riffs and John Stanier\u2019s flawless rhythms, Helmet\u2019s blueprint is laid out on opener Repetition, FBLA and Blacktop. Yet not every song here is cut from the same cloth; the hopped-up tempo and sometimes louche groove of Distracted and swing of Make Room hints at what the band would lean into in later years.<\/p>\n

The album highlight is Sinatra, a slow-burning track (later covered by Deftones) which broods and lurches with intent between sheets of jagged guitars and Hamilton screaming “I hate everything as much as I hate me\u201d over the squall. If that hits the spot, seek out the John Peel Session version recorded in 1991, where everything is cranked up an extra few notches.<\/p>\n

With a running time just shy of 30 minutes, the album\u2019s intensity and brutish force of its delivery doesn\u2019t overstay its welcome.<\/p>\n

2. Meantime (1992)
After the success of Nirvana\u2019s Nevermind, major labels were climbing over themselves to sign their very own alt-rock cash-cow, and the modest sales of Strap It On led to an estimated 20 labels trying to sign Helmet. Interscope, who\u2019d courted the New York City quartet long before the Nirvana\u2019s career went nuclear, ended up signing the band for $1 million dollars.<\/p>\n

To their credit, Helmet didn\u2019t temper their sound one iota. Opening salvo In The Meantime \u2013 engineered by the late Steve Albini<\/a> \u2013 opens with a violent eddy of noise before giving way to a bludgeoning riff and Hamilton\u2019s snarl. Turned Out is similarly unyielding, while Give It undulates with a Sabbath swing. But it\u2019s the clipped riffs of Unsung \u2013 the only single from Meantime \u2013 which stands out, and given the thumbs up by those arbiters of ’90s alt-culture, Beavis and Butt-Head: “If you saw these guys on the street, you wouldn’t even know that they’re cool.”<\/p>\n

Meantime may not done the commercial business Interscope hoped for, but its influence remains strong.<\/p>\n

1. Betty (1994)
Where Meantime was an aural assault, its follow-up Betty was an altogether different beast. <\/p>\n

By the time the band entered the studio, Peter Mengede had left and been replaced by Rest in Pieces\u2019 guitarist Rob Echeverria. Page had surrendered his de facto production role to hip hop producer T-Ray, who\u2019d made some remixes of Just Another Victim, their Judgment Night soundtrack<\/a> collaboration with House of Pain. Betty had more than enough crunch to satisfy those who\u2019d worn out their copies of Meantime \u2013 Wilma\u2019s Rainbow, I Know, Tic \u2013 but there was a palpable sense of experimentation and a deeper groove which informed their third studio album. <\/p>\n

Biscuits for Smut, Street Crab and Vaccination, bounce and swing beneath Hamilton\u2019s understated vocals. The Silver Hawaiian swaggers like Tom Waits, and closer Sam Hell tells the story of New York City\u2019s more colourful characters \u2013 \u201cShe’s known for making good gravy and cat” \u2013 over a distorted blues riff. Helmet could do mellow, too. Hamilton, who holds a Master\u2019s Degree in Jazz Guitar at the Manhattan School of Music, performs a delicate version of Bill Evan\u2019s Beautiful Love before the jazz recital does a handbrake turn into freeform squall. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe didn\u2019t want to feel like we\u2019d sold out by simply trying to repeat the success of Meantime,\u201d remembers Page. \u201cIf you don\u2019t step in a few piles of shit along the way you\u2019re probably not trying.\u201d <\/p>\n
