Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> on Wednesday said he would be taking Thursday night off out of respect for Stephen Colbert<\/a> and his \u201cLate Show\u201d team, which will be airing its final episode. <\/p>\n

\u201cI think you know how I feel about the fact that they are being pushed out,\u201d said Kimmel, who has spoken out repeatedly against the decision to cancel Colbert\u2019s show. \u201cI hope the people who did the pushing feel ashamed of themselves tonight, although I know they probably won\u2019t.\u201d <\/p>\n

Kimmel said he never felt like he was competing with Colbert despite being on rival networks in the same time slot. The two have appeared on each other\u2019s shows, and on Wednesday night, Kimmel invited Colbert to come back \u201cas many times as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd on behalf of everyone at our show, we want to say to everyone at your show, it has been a pleasure to work alongside you,\u201d Kimmel said. <\/p>\n

He said he would be watching Colbert\u2019s final show himself on Thursday, and urged his audience to do the same \u2015 but with one caveat so as not to reward those who fired his friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cI hope that those of you who watch our show will also tune in to CBS \u2015 for the last time,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t ever watch it again, but watch tomorrow night to wish Stephen and our friends at \u2018The Late Show\u2019 a fond farewell.\u201d <\/p>\n

CBS announced the cancelation of \u201cThe Late Show\u201d last summer, just as Trump had repeatedly demanded and just as corporate parent Paramount sought approval from the Federal Communications Commission to complete a merger.<\/p>\n

The merger was approved just one week later<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The network claimed Colbert\u2019s show \u2015 which had the highest ratings in its time slot \u2015 had been losing $40 million a year, but Kimmel last year dismissed that as \u201cobvious lies.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s no way it\u2019s even close to that,\u201d he said on the \u201cWhere Everybody Knows Your Name\u201d podcast<\/a>. \u201cI know how finances of late night television shows work, and it\u2019s just ridiculous. It doesn\u2019t make any sense at all.\u201d <\/p>\n
