{"id":43849,"date":"2025-09-26T05:06:08","date_gmt":"2025-09-26T05:06:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/43849\/"},"modified":"2025-09-26T05:06:08","modified_gmt":"2025-09-26T05:06:08","slug":"confidential-wellington-council-documents-found-by-man-in-mayoral-desk-brought-from-dump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/43849\/","title":{"rendered":"Confidential Wellington council documents found by man in mayoral desk brought from dump"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/4MSBELP_image_crop_103160\" width=\"1050\" height=\"699\" alt=\"Confidential papers\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"photo-captioned__information\">\nConfidential papers<br \/>\nPhoto: 123RF\n<\/p>\n<p>The Wellington City Council is investigating after reports a stash of confidential documents was found by a member of the public in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/574013\/wellington-town-hall-furniture-snapped-up-everyone-loves-a-piece-of-solid-wood\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">old mayoral desk bought from the tip shop<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The NZ Herald is reporting there are hundreds of papers.<\/p>\n<p>The council told RNZ it was &#8220;taking the situation extremely seriously and are working with our legal and privacy staff &#8211; along with staff and contractors involved with the disposal of the Town Hall furniture &#8211; to understand what has happened&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>They had also contacted the member of the public who found the documents, and alerted the Privacy Commissioner.<\/p>\n<p>The building was shut in 2013 for earthquake strengthening.<\/p>\n<p>Former mayor Kerry Prendergast told RNZ she understood the papers covered the years in which she, Dame Fran Wilde and Mark Blumsky were mayor.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is long before the days of digital storage,&#8221;
