{"id":440158,"date":"2026-05-22T14:53:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T14:53:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/440158\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T14:53:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T14:53:09","slug":"hi-tech-awards-2026-tait-communications-and-hectre-among-big-winners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/440158\/","title":{"rendered":"Hi-Tech Awards 2026: Tait Communications and Hectre among big winners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\"> \u201cWhile Tait was founded 57 years ago, the company continues to innovate on the global stage and move at speed \u2013 not an easy achievement for such a well-established company,\u201d the panel of international judges said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cTait is coming off a phenomenal year, passing the half-billion-dollar revenue mark. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cIt grew organically and by acquisition, expanding into new countries and introduced technically advanced new products, and it competes strongly on the world stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The entrance to Tait Communications new Christchurch campus.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>The entrance to Tait Communications new Christchurch campus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">The maker of radio communications gear has had a focus on keeping manufacturing local at its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robot-takeover-antioch-co-founded-by-kiwi-harry-mellsop-raises-15m-at-a-102m-valuation-tech-insider\/premium\/Y2FHNDQZTRDZBOW3JOO4DGF7M4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/ai-robot-takeover-antioch-co-founded-by-kiwi-harry-mellsop-raises-15m-at-a-102m-valuation-tech-insider\/premium\/Y2FHNDQZTRDZBOW3JOO4DGF7M4\/\">sprawling Christchurch campus<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">Its biggest growth spurt in recent times came over 2023 and 2024 as revenue jumped from $421.6m to $426.6m on Tait\u2019s acquisition of distressed Australian player RFI. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">In 2025, Tait made a net profit of $44.1m on $516m revenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">Tait has itself been the subject of acquisition. In 2018, Japan\u2019s JVC Kenwood received Overseas Investment Office approval to acquire 40% of the Christchurch firm, with the option to acquire the remaining 60% at a future date. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">It has yet to do so; the Sir Angus Tait Trust still owns a majority of the shares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">Tait\u2019s customers in 150 countries include the London Fire Brigade, Transport for London\u2019s 10,000-strong bus fleet, and various public safety agencies and utilities across the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">But one of its biggest projects has been at home with its involvement in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585403\/radio-rollout-of-communications-system-for-first-responders-delayed\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.rnz.co.nz\/news\/national\/585403\/radio-rollout-of-communications-system-for-first-responders-delayed\">$1b-plus Public Safety Network<\/a> overhaul of emergency communications. Investors include Sam Morgan and Peter Thiel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">Vend was sold to Canadian firm Lightspeed for around $455m in 2021. Fergusson held an 8% stake at the time of the sale.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">He invested in a dozen start-ups, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/upstock-boosts-seed-funding-to-13m-signs-woolworths-in-deal-founder-says-will-boost-competition\/DOT5VYAMUJGDHF4KQR4MQ2AJHQ\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/upstock-boosts-seed-funding-to-13m-signs-woolworths-in-deal-founder-says-will-boost-competition\/DOT5VYAMUJGDHF4KQR4MQ2AJHQ\/\">Upstock<\/a> (which aims to make life easier for small firms ordering wholesale supplies and dealing with supermarket stocking) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/green-finance-and-emissions-tracking-coming-to-kiwibank\/I5H5DZ2SHG5UWIB7LT5QZOGMN4\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/banking-finance\/green-finance-and-emissions-tracking-coming-to-kiwibank\/I5H5DZ2SHG5UWIB7LT5QZOGMN4\/\">CoGo<\/a>, an app that helps users track the planet-friendliness of their spending.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">He also created the OMGTech! trust that helped underprivileged kids get tech education. It was wound down in late 2024, with Fergusson blaming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/gut-wrenching-digital-skills-trust-omg-tech-winds-down-after-govt-funding-reprioritised\/3KSEKNSTFRGRVIC6NDSF7B62LY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/gut-wrenching-digital-skills-trust-omg-tech-winds-down-after-govt-funding-reprioritised\/3KSEKNSTFRGRVIC6NDSF7B62LY\/\">\u201ca change in priorities for government\u201d<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nAzlsRkyMsZOvyL\" style=\"display:none\">Fergusson\u2019s induction came as the Hi-Tech Trust board prepared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/flying-kiwi-hi-tech-hall-of-fame-board-weighs-sir-rod-drurys-place\/7HTW5NH5WFC4HKWPWIA2RXWHHY\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/flying-kiwi-hi-tech-hall-of-fame-board-weighs-sir-rod-drurys-place\/7HTW5NH5WFC4HKWPWIA2RXWHHY\/\">review allegations<\/a> of sexual misconduct made against Hall of Fame member Sir Rod Drury.
