{"id":441271,"date":"2026-05-23T07:18:21","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T07:18:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/441271\/"},"modified":"2026-05-23T07:18:21","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T07:18:21","slug":"sculpture-from-carbondales-2025-art-around-town-exhibition-finds-new-home-with-anb-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/441271\/","title":{"rendered":"Sculpture from Carbondale\u2019s 2025 Art Around Town exhibition finds new home with ANB Bank"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the past year, a swirling welded steel sculpture titled \u201cSidewinder\u201d has been nestled near the Rio Grande Trail behind Carbondale\u2019s Community Center.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the town\u2019s 2025 Art Around Town exhibition, the piece was set to be removed and returned to California-based artist Diego Harris <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postindependent.com\/news\/first-sculpture-of-carbondales-2026-art-around-town-artwalk-installed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before the 2026 Artwalk in June<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, \u201cSidewinder\u201d has found a permanent home in Carbondale. The sculpture was purchased by ANB Bank and now resides outside of the bank\u2019s in-progress Sopris Station mixed-use development site along Colorado Highway133.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(The purchase) was part of our development in the town, and we support Art around Town and all the artists that are here,\u201d Tony Spires, community bank president, said. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to have the opportunity to (buy it). It\u2019s a great opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Town of Carbondale employees and Harris moved the sculpture to its new home on Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was happy (about the sale),\u201d Harris told the Post Independent. \u201cI like when they sell and I like when they stay publicly viewable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(ANB) is a community bank and that\u2019s nice,\u201d he later added. \u201cA of the bigger banks have been leaving smaller towns, so it\u2019s nice that they\u2019re investing in a more rural area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris also brought a new piece to Carbondale for his third year as a featured artist in the Art Around Town exhibition. \u201cShaman\u2019s Path\u201d now sits near the intersection of Main Street and Snowmass Drive.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The abstract piece is made of corten steel, which forms a protective rust patina that prevents further erosion and gives it a distinctly weathered look.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Since he began welding in 2007, Harris has mastered the art of blending natural patterns, including swirls and spirals, with industrial elements, creating sculptures that he describes as both \u201cwhimsical\u201d and \u201clarger-than-life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like nature. I like organic shapes. I try to make them look as natural as possible. Spirals \u2014\u00a0 they\u2019ve been around forever. They\u2019re as ancient as the universe,\u201d Harris said. \u201c\u2026I like more industrial designs, too. The materials are industrial and the process is industrial, but I try to make it look more organic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">What\u2019s playing. What\u2019s showing. The piece is a free-flowing spiral that unwinds, extending into an oval that swirls into the ground. The design is based on earrings Harris used to make, but one he has not captured in a sculpture before.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a design I\u2019ve been wanting to make for a while,\u201d Harris said. \u201cIt\u2019s a little different. I haven\u2019t done it yet because it seemed a little more involved then I felt like dealing with in the past, because I\u2019m usually kind of strapped for time, but I had a little bit of time at the beginning of this year, and I decided to just go for it.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" data-image-url=\"https:\/\/swiftmedia.s3.amazonaws.com\/mountain.swiftcom.com\/images\/sites\/6\/2026\/05\/21164525\/DSC_0515-scaled.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/DSC_0515-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1052364\"  \/>Diego Harris\u2019s sculpture, \u201cShaman\u2019s Path,\u201d was installed Monday as part of Carbondale\u2019s upcoming 2026 Art Around Town exhibition. Julianna O\u2019Clair\/ Post Independent<\/p>\n<p>Carbondale residents can enjoy \u201cShaman\u2019s Path,\u201d and 15 other sculptures that will be installed over the next month, for a year.
