The Gut Foundation\u2019s bold Gut Check campaign is running throughout May and also includes signage that touts the phrases: Salad Bowel, Lawn Bowels and Eau De Colon. <\/p>\n

According to the foundation\u2019s research, only 17% of Kiwis can explain why gut health matters and over 1 million adults feel too embarrassed to talk to their GP about gut symptoms. <\/p>\n

Gut Foundation chief executive Alice Fitzgerald said New Zealanders are dying because they find their digestive systems too awkward to discuss. <\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve chosen to be bold because we must make this campaign a conversation starter. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe gut isn\u2019t just a bathroom issue, it\u2019s our physical and mental command centre. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt is our primary defence against chronic disease and a \u2018second brain\u2019 that influences our sleep, mood and mental clarity. <\/p>\n

\u201cOur research shows too many New Zealanders are unaware of these links. <\/p>\n

\u201cNo matter your age, your gut health is the foundation of your wellbeing.\u201d <\/p>\n

New Zealand<\/a> has one of the worst bowel cancer rates<\/a> in the world, and the fastest-rising rate of bowel cancer in those under 50. <\/p>\n

Every day, nine people are diagnosed with bowel cancer and three die. <\/p>\n

Caught early, survival is 90%. However, embarrassment often stops people acting in time. <\/p>\n

Fitzgerald said it\u2019s not just cancer. <\/p>\n

A healthy gut is critical for the entire body, yet most people are unaware of its role in defending against type 2 diabetes, obesity and autoimmune conditions, she said.<\/p>\n

\"RealReal estate agent Milly Sabin is supporting the Gut Foundation\u2019s gut health campaign.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe research proves that traditional, clinical messaging isn\u2019t working. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe campaign\u2019s core purpose is to normalise gut talk with friends, wh\u0101nau and health professionals, so people recognise symptoms earlier and seek care sooner.\u201d <\/p>\n
