The spacecraft passed within 2,864 miles (4,609 kilometers) of the Martian surface on May 15, taking a suite of color images, including this close-up of the double-ringed Huygens crater and the heavily cratered southern highlands surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-00d138f5-bc7b-43a5-abbf-b4f3ef3453dc-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Aside from the image of Huygens crater, Psyche obtained close-ups of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26774-nasas-psyche-mission-spies-mars-wind-blown-craters-during-close-approach\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26774-nasas-psyche-mission-spies-mars-wind-blown-craters-during-close-approach\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">wind blowing over craters<\/a> in the Syrtis Major region and a high-resolution view of the water-ice-rich <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26773-psyches-high-resolution-view-of-mars-south-pole\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26773-psyches-high-resolution-view-of-mars-south-pole\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">south polar cap<\/a> of Mars.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-9680394e-2193-48e5-9d83-475e977f5562\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">In other spectacular images taken as Psyche approached and departed the planet, Mars appears as a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26771-nasas-psyche-mission-images-the-crescent-of-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/images\/pia26771-nasas-psyche-mission-images-the-crescent-of-mars\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">thin crescent<\/a> \u2014 a rare perspective afforded by Psyche&#8217;s high angle of approach. Researchers also observed sunlight scattering through Mars&#8217; dusty atmosphere, creating a brighter-than-expected glow around the edge of the planet. It was part of an effort to calibrate Psyche&#8217;s multispectral cameras well in advance of its arrival at asteroid 16 Psyche. &#8220;As the spacecraft continues its journey after the flyby, we&#8217;ll continue calibration imaging of Mars for the rest of the month as it recedes into the distance,&#8221; Bell added.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">NASA&#8217;s solar-powered Psyche mission launched Oct. 13, 2023, on a complex route to the asteroid belt. The asteroid is thought to be the exposed core of a planetesimal, a building block of an early planet.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The abundant metals on the asteroid are thought to be worth <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/usd100-000-quadrillion-asteroid-psyche-may-be-the-product-of-metal-volcanoes-study-hints\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/usd100-000-quadrillion-asteroid-psyche-may-be-the-product-of-metal-volcanoes-study-hints\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/asteroids\/usd100-000-quadrillion-asteroid-psyche-may-be-the-product-of-metal-volcanoes-study-hints\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">many quadrillions of dollars<\/a> \u2014 though, at the moment, there is no feasible plan for extracting them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-83682517-380c-485e-bac9-c3017e59b047\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">What do you know about the Red Planet?
