Motorists who do not fit chains in snowy or icy conditions in the Queenstown Lakes district may be fined for the first time.<\/p>\n
The $750 fine will be enforceable under the Queenstown Lakes District Council’s traffic and parking bylaw.<\/p>\n
The rules meant motorists needed to carry and fit chains on all council managed roads when conditions warrant them<\/p>\n
Police will be responsible for issuing infringements.<\/p>\n
The council’s strategic asset manager Alison Tomlinson said motorists needed to not only carry chains in their car, but know how to fit them.<\/p>\n
“Introducing enforcement will help ensure grit trucks can access and clear major routes as quickly as possible,” she said.<\/p>\n
“In previous years, vehicles stuck or abandoned in snow have delayed road crews and slowed efforts to reopen critical roads.”<\/p>\n
Enforcement might happen when a “chains required” sign was displayed or when motorists were instructed to fit chains by police, ski field operators, or council staff or contractors.<\/p>\n
