{"id":444316,"date":"2026-05-25T11:43:14","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T11:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/444316\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T11:43:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T11:43:14","slug":"nasa-and-rocket-lab-may-figure-out-in-space-fueling-before-spacex-does-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/444316\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA and Rocket Lab May Figure Out In-Space Fueling Before SpaceX Does"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Space is hard.<\/p>\n<p>Tasks as simple as &#8220;filling up the tank&#8221; here on Earth become complex exercises in fluid dynamics when you add in factors such as:<\/p>\n<p>The extreme cold of cryogenic liquid methane and oxygen &#8212; and its tendency to boil off as gaseous methane and oxygen if temperatures rise.<br \/>\nThe lack of gravity to move fuel in the direction you want it to go.<br \/>\nThe need to fire thrusters to create a bit of gravity.<br \/>\nAnd the extreme temperature variations spacecraft encounter when exposed to direct sunlight (or deprived of it) while orbiting Earth with no protective atmosphere &#8212; all while trying to steadily transfer fuel from one tank to another.  <\/p>\n<p>And yet, figuring out how to refuel spacecraft in orbit will be essential if we&#8217;re ever to launch spacecraft capable of traveling more than just &#8220;one tankful&#8221; away from Earth. It&#8217;s especially essential in the context of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2026\/03\/29\/jared-isaacman-has-big-plans-for-nasa\/\" class=\"text-cyan-900 hover:text-cyan-800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA&#8217;s Project Artemis<\/a>, which proposes to use a SpaceX Starship, tweaked to serve as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/2021\/04\/16\/nasa-chooses-spacex-to-send-astronauts-to-moon\/\" class=\"text-cyan-900 hover:text-cyan-800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Human Landing System<\/a>, to carry astronauts to the moon and back.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Earth orbit crowded with satellites.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"880\" height=\"464\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"h-auto max-w-full rounded object-contain\" style=\"color:transparent\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779709394_548_.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"caption\">Image source: Getty Images.<\/p>\n<p>The problem<\/p>\n<p>SpaceX estimates it will need to launch 12 Starships, each fully loaded with methalox fuel (liquid methane and liquid oxygen), to fill up its Human Landing System in orbit. This will give HLS enough fuel to leave Earth orbit, travel to lunar orbit, dock with the Artemis IV Orion spacecraft, descend to the moon, and finally reascend to lunar orbit for another docking with Orion. Before this can happen, though, SpaceX must master the procedure for transferring cryogenic liquid fuel between Starships in orbit, first by demonstrating that it is feasible, then by repeating it &#8212; over and over and over again. <\/p>\n<p>At last report, SpaceX was planning to demonstrate orbital cryogenic fuel transfer between Starship tankers in June 2026. Starship is a bit behind schedule in its development, however, and there&#8217;s no guarantee it will accomplish this (which would require back-to-back Starship launches, by the way, probably no more than a week apart) next month.  <\/p>\n<p>But hopefully soon.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, at Rocket Lab<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, NASA just announced plans to conduct its own cryogenic fuel transfer demonstration &#8212; SpaceX not included.  <\/p>\n<p>As reported on NASA.gov last week, Rocket Lab (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/quote\/nasdaq\/rklb\/\" class=\"font-bold hover:underline\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">RKLB<\/a> +8.23%) has been hired to launch an Eta Space-built LOXSAT spacecraft on a nine-month mission to demonstrate &#8220;11 cryogenic fluid management technologies&#8221; in orbit, &#8220;including reducing boiloff, transferring propellant, maintaining tank pressure, and gauging propellant levels.&#8221; All of these will be &#8220;necessary for creating in-space propellant depots, essentially gas stations in space, that could support long-term exploration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They&#8217;ll also be essential for refueling Starships in orbit.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Rocket Lab Stock Quote\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"64\" height=\"64\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"w-full flex-none object-contain\" style=\"color:transparent\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779709394_863_.png\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Today&#8217;s Change<\/p>\n<p>(8.23%) $10.33<\/p>\n<p>Current Price<\/p>\n<p>$135.78<\/p>\n<p>Key Data Points<\/p>\n<p>Market Cap<\/p>\n<p>$79B<\/p>\n<p>Day&#8217;s Range<\/p>\n<p>$131.34 &#8211; $139.74<\/p>\n<p>52wk Range<\/p>\n<p>$25.24 &#8211; $139.76<\/p>\n<p>Volume<\/p>\n<p>1.1M<\/p>\n<p>Avg Vol<\/p>\n<p>24.3M<\/p>\n<p>Gross Margin<\/p>\n<p>33.77%<\/p>\n<p>What it means for Rocket Lab<\/p>\n<p>Eta is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/terms\/s\/start-up\/\" class=\"text-cyan-900 hover:text-cyan-800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">start-up<\/a> space company &#8212; so new that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.spglobal.com\/market-intelligence\/en\" class=\"text-cyan-900 hover:text-cyan-800\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence<\/a> doesn&#8217;t yet have any data on it. Rocket Lab&#8217;s role in the project is to provide the Electron rocket to launch LOXSAT and a Photon satellite bus to carry the payload to the correct orbit for the demonstration. A tentative launch date for LOXSAT has been set for July 17.<\/p>\n<p>Now it&#8217;s a race between SpaceX and Rocket Lab to see which company can first demonstrate a technology that may be essential to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/investing\/how-to-invest\/stocks\/how-to-invest-in-spacex-stock\/\" class=\"text-cyan-900 hover:text-cyan-800\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the future of SpaceX itself<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Space is hard.
