\u201cThere was a lady just screaming out for help,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI asked her, \u2018Is there anyone in the house?\u2019 and she said there\u2019s an old lady in there.\u201d<\/p>\n
Manua said he abandoned his car in the middle of the road and rushed inside, where the fire had already begun spreading from the kitchen toward the bedrooms.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was already smoky and the mum was still lying in bed while the fire was getting bigger and bigger,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were two other people there, but they couldn\u2019t lift her, so I just grabbed the old lady, put her in the wheelchair, wrapped her in a blanket and took her out the house.\u201d<\/p>\n

Video captured shortly after the rescue shows large flames and thick black smoke surging from the roof of the home.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy adrenaline was high,\u201d Manua said.<\/p>\n
He estimated the rescue took less than two minutes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fire spread really quick and I got there just in time. <\/p>\n
\u201cIt could have been a different story because if the house was fully in flames, I don\u2019t think she would have made it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fire and Emergency New Zealand said they were called to the blaze about 4.20pm.<\/p>\n
Five fire engines were sent to the scene and arrived to find the single-level home \u201cwell involved\u201d with fire in the roof of the property.<\/p>\n
Manua said instinct took over the moment he heard the desperate cries outside the burning home.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you hear that lady\u2019s voice screaming for help, I don\u2019t think I can turn that down. I don\u2019t think you\u2019re going to turn away from that.\u201d<\/p>\n
Manua said the woman\u2019s daughter and granddaughter later thanked him for rescuing her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was just speechless to be honest. I didn\u2019t want to stay there too long. I just asked if everyone else was all right, then left.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m just grateful I could help.<\/p>\n
