\n\tPaul McCartney<\/a> sat down with Paul Mescal<\/a>, the actor who portrays him in the upcoming films about the Beatles<\/a>, to discuss his new album.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe two Pauls sat down \u201cIn Conversation\u201d for an exclusive short film posted by Amazon<\/a>. In the 10-minute chat in the same restaurant the album trailer was filmed, the rocker and the actor talked about the nostalgic The Boys of Dungeon Lane<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHow do you feel about being interviewed?\u201d Mescal asked McCartney.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt depends if I like the person. Which is where we\u2019re running into a problem already,\u201d McCartney joked. \u201cNo, I find if I like who I\u2019m being interviewed by, it comes easy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMescal asked McCartney about his songwriting process on The Boys of Dungeon Lane, which features lyrics made up of memories but still \u201cin the present tense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI haven\u2019t got a formula,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cThey used to ask me and John [Lennon], \u2018How\u2019d you do it? Who writes the music, who writes the words?\u2019 I don\u2019t know. To me, I think any story or song you\u2019re gonna do, it\u2019s gotta involve memory. With the Beatles, we always tried to write something different.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMescal then questioned McCartney about new album songs like \u201cLost Horizon\u201d and \u201cSalesman Saint,\u201d a song written about McCartney\u2019s parents.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI often remember that my mom and dad had me in World War 2. I\u2019ve always known that growing up, but at certain point you go \u2018Wow,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cIt occurred to me that it\u2019d be good to just put down some stuff about them carrying on through whatever they had to put up with.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMescal then asked McCartney about the actor\u2019s \u201cfavorite\u201d song on the album, the first single \u201cDays We Left Behind<\/a>,\u201d which alludes to his time along Lennon.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe collaboration you had with them all and the relationship you had with John, it\u2019s such a full, brilliant, complicated thing, and where\u2019s your heart with all of that now? Mescal asked.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLooking back on your life, I ran into this guy called John Lennon, and he was fighting life \u2014 he had a lot trouble, his dad had left home, his mom had got run over, he had a lot of trouble in there \u2014 so he was putting up a shield, so he was very witty, very biting,\u201d McCartney said. \u201cWhen it came to writing, that kind of relationship stayed there, so on this record, I might even refer to him in my mind, as if we\u2019re still writing together.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Boys of Dungeon Lane arrives May 29.
