\n The wealthiest people in America have split from the poorest. The war in Iran is making it worse, squeezing low-income households that spend the largest portion of their income on gas and necessities.\n <\/p>\n
\n But it\u2019s now becoming clear that the income distribution in America is not shaped like a K, and the letter is the wrong way to explain the economy.\n <\/p>\n
\n A new way of explaining America\u2019s economic puzzle is needed: the \u201cpremium economy\u201d economy.\n <\/p>\n
\n More Americans have left the cramped, no-frills service of life in basic economy and moved up to premium class. They can afford the nicer flights, better groceries and fancier experiences of this upgraded section, but can\u2019t reach the high-touch, hot towel service of home ownership and retirement in the next class.\n <\/p>\n

\n Despite a growing chunk of people entering the ranks<\/a> of the upper middle class and even becoming millionaires,<\/a> they feel like they\u2019re falling behind. That\u2019s because owning a home, the defining symbol of middle-class life in America, has drifted out of reach<\/a>. Retiring like the Baby Boomers, whose wealth has grown<\/a> faster than younger generations, also seems to be in jeopardy.\n <\/p>\n \n So people are instead trading up where they can \u2014 spending their rising wages<\/a> on the smaller, attainable perks they can afford in premium class. This shift has punished companies competing entirely on price, such as Spirit Airlines and Dollar General, while lifting the likes of Walmart and United Airlines that consumers perceive as higher quality.\n <\/p>\n \n Consider: Last year, Delta and United accounted for more than 90% of the airline industry\u2019s profits<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cPeople have been waiting to call the death of consumer, but the consumer is still spending,\u201d said Simeon Siegel, a retail analyst at Guggenheim Partners. \u201cIt\u2019s much easier to label everything as a K-shaped economy.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n The upper-middle class grew from 10% of families in 1979 to 31% in 2024.\n <\/p>\n \n This group\u2019s share of income also doubled, according to recent research<\/a> from the American Enterprise Institute. A family of three earning $133,000 to $400,000 per year was defined as upper-middle class.\n <\/p>\n \n Meanwhile, the proportion of families who were classified as poor and lower-middle class also fell over the past five decades.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe whole distribution has moved up,\u201d said Scott Winship, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and co-author of the study. \u201cIt undercuts the idea that there\u2019s hollowing out of the middle class.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n But the American dream of buying a home has disappeared for many younger generations. Nearly 40% of Americans do not own their home, so they missed out on soaring home values after the pandemic. Home prices have since ballooned<\/a> to five times the average median income, trapping people <\/a>in place.\n <\/p>\n \n So the new members of the upper-middle class are redirecting their higher wages to spending on the products and services they can afford. Travel, concerts and other fun activities have replaced home ownership in the \u201cpremium economy\u201d economy.\n <\/p>\n \n Retail sales have also climbed<\/a> for three consecutive months, bolstered by a healthy labor market<\/a> and higher tax refunds<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n \n \u201cThe consumer is still spending and working,\u201d Ameriprise Financial chief market strategist Anthony Saglimbene said in a note to clients last week. \u201cIf inflation pressures ease at some point, the \u2018K-shape\u2019 in the economy could begin to flatten.\u201d\n <\/p>\n \n This summer\u2019s travel season is expected to surpass the last two, according to a recent Bank of America survey.
