{"id":446484,"date":"2026-05-26T19:04:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:04:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/446484\/"},"modified":"2026-05-26T19:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-26T19:04:12","slug":"can-iphones-film-underwater","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/446484\/","title":{"rendered":"Can iPhones film underwater?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p title=\"Future iPhone camera lenses could be protected to shoot underwater, possibly via a slim case.\">Future iPhone camera lenses could be protected to shoot underwater, possibly via a slim case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-lede\">New research shows that Apple doesn&#8217;t just want to protect <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/inside\/iphone\" title=\"iPhone\" data-kpt=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">iPhones<\/a> from water damage, it wants them to take perfect photos while in that water.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>There have <a href=\"https:\/\/appleinsider.com\/articles\/19\/07\/26\/review-axisgo-underwater-housing-helps-capture-stunning-images\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">long been<\/a> third-party accessories that make it possible to film underwater with an iPhone. But as Apple itself notes in a <a href=\"https:\/\/ppubs.uspto.gov\/api\/pdf\/downloadPdf\/12638752?requestToken=eyJzdWIiOiI3ZDIyZGY0OC1iY2I4LTQ4ZGEtYTM1NC05ZmJhYjNhZTY4OTAiLCJ2ZXIiOiJjNWFlODIwMC1iMThlLTQ1OGYtODU2MS1hZjlkNDdiNTU3ODEiLCJleHAiOjB9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">newly-granted patent<\/a>, such devices came with a specific problem.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When capturing images underwater, typically the camera system must be protected from the water,&#8221; says Apple in the &#8220;Plurality Of Optical Centers In A Unified Free Form, Hemispherical Optic&#8221; patent. In certain cases, &#8220;a barrier specific to the lens may be provided, for example in the case of a dome port.&#8221;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>But putting these in front of the lens is a balancing act. Instead, it could be a protective single layer that &#8220;also acts as a lens as part of each lens stack for the various camera modules.&#8221;&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If the camera lenses and modules &#8220;are arranged along a flat surface,&#8221; says Apple, &#8220;then the singular optic may be substantially flat.&#8221; It wouldn&#8217;t be completely flat because there&#8217;d still be some domes, but then there could also be a curved version.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s because Apple also proposes that if the cameras are arranged over a curved surface, this singular optic could be made to follow the curve. &#8220;The curvature of each of the domes matches the curvature of an underlying lens,&#8221; says the patent.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The key part of the proposal is that this singular optic, this sole barrier, would truly be made as one element. So there wouldn&#8217;t be entirely separate dome ports for each camera, and there would be less chance for water ingress.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Being made from one piece of material, it would not have the usual &#8220;seams, glue, or other joining materials.&#8221; &#13;<\/p>\n<p>That would also mean that there wouldn&#8217;t have to be space left for that joining together of components. But based on the six pages of diagrams, and four of detailed text, it looks like it&#8217;s found a particularly small format for the protection.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>It might still be too bulky for Apple to just make every iPhone have this extra protection. But it would so easily fit in a separate iPhone case.&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The patent is credited to two inventors, Ryan M. Sheridan, and Benjamin D. Buckner. The latter has previously worked for Apple on a patent concerning the <a href=\"https:\/\/ppubs.uspto.gov\/api\/pdf\/downloadPdf\/20240080458?requestToken=eyJzdWIiOiIwNTAwZWRiZi00ZTkyLTRmMTktYmMwNC00MzY2ZWJlMGJmMjciLCJ2ZXIiOiI1ZGYxMGYyOS1mODNjLTRiMzQtOTEzZS01NjUzMmQ0NDA5YjgiLCJleHAiOjB9\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;fisheye&#8221; distortion<\/a> caused by certain lenses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Future iPhone camera lenses could be protected to shoot underwater, possibly via a slim case.
