River connectivity supports entire aquatic ecosystems, from insects to birds and mammals. war-torn Ukraine, have also undertaken barrier removals in recent years, Ortigara pointed out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbrw5rz00193b6r61kw0zn7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the United States, large dam removals have shown how quickly rivers can recover once barriers come down.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbrw5rz001a3b6rlgiv00nn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On California\u2019s Klamath River, the largest dam removal project in US history was completed in 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/travel\/klamath-river-indigenous-paddle-c2e-spc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reopening hundreds of miles of habitat<\/a> for migratory fish. On Washington\u2019s Elwha River, earlier dam removals restored sediment flow and triggered the return of fish and vegetation after more than a century of disruption. In Europe, many removals still involve much smaller structures \u2014 low weirs, culverts and aging hydropower barriers \u2014 but experts say their cumulative impact is growing.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbrw5rz001b3b6rz4f6jele@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have more than a million barriers in Europe,\u201d Ortigara said. \u201cRemoving a few hundred each year is a start \u2014 but it\u2019s not enough.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbrw5rz001c3b6ry6fyd11q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Success, experts say, will depend on restoring entire river stretches and drainage basins, working closely with local communities and ensuring that once connectivity is restored, it is maintained over time. \u201cThe real challenge now is implementation \u2014 doing it at scale and in a strategic way,\u201d the European Environment Agency said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmpbrw5rz001d3b6r2rkf9wlm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWhen a river is alive, it has a sound,\u201d Ortigara said. \u201cYou hear it trickling down the rocks.
