\u201cWe\u2019re very, very excited to have them on display,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were called the Norsewear Climbing Sock.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThey were designed similar to a Farm Fleck, but they came up almost to the knee, and Sir Ed\u2019s socks are enormous.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was obviously a tall man, and he had big feet, but they got him to the top of Everest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Deane said they were grateful to the Hillary family for allowing them to put the socks on display.<\/p>\n
He said while they haven\u2019t washed them, they smelled \u201cremarkably good\u201d.<\/p>\n
Deane said as far as he was aware, the socks were worn during Hillary\u2019s last major expedition.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have been in the Hillary family since then, and Alex Hillary \u2013 who\u2019s Sir Ed\u2019s grandson \u2013 wears some of our modern Norsewear socks on his adventures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe was working through the archives and found them and sent us a photograph of the original socks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe asked Alex if the family would mind lending them to us, so that\u2019s how we ended up tracking them down, and we\u2019ll have them on display.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deane said the whole factory was excited.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough we now make you know way more technical modern socks than these, it\u2019s lovely to have this as part of the Norsewear story.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of pride, I think you know, from the folks in the factory right through to people like me.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re lucky to be custodians of such a special part of New Zealand\u2019s history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deane said he wasn\u2019t concerned the socks would get damaged as they were robust and made of New Zealand wool.<\/p>\n
But he said the socks would be in a case at Fieldays.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey will be protected, and they will be put in safekeeping overnight, and we\u2019ve got to make sure that we can give them back to the Hillary family at the end of Fieldays so they will be able to be seen but not touched,\u201d Deane said.<\/p>\n
The Fieldays are at Mystery Creek, Hamilton, from June 10-13. <\/p>\n
