{"id":448146,"date":"2026-05-27T18:24:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:24:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/448146\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T18:24:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T18:24:08","slug":"extreme-heat-in-europe-a-brutal-reminder-of-climate-crisis-un-chief-says-extreme-heat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/448146\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme heat in Europe \u2018a brutal reminder\u2019 of climate crisis, UN chief says | Extreme heat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The UN climate chief has said an extreme early heat event sweeping parts of western Europe was \u201ca brutal reminder of the spiralling impacts of the climate crisis\u201d, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/france\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">France<\/a> and the UK set new temperature records for May on two consecutive days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Simon Stiell, the executive secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said on Wednesday the \u201cmain culprit\u201d was humanity\u2019s burning of coal, oil and gas \u2013 known to be the primary driver of climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe science is clear that human-induced climate change is making these heatwaves more frequent and extreme,\u201d Stiell said, as France, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/spain\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a> and the UK sweltered in temperatures usually associated with July or August.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cProtecting human lives, businesses and economies from extreme heat and the many other soaring costs of climate change is core business for every nation, and it starts with kicking the fossil fuel addiction much faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The war in the Middle East had laid bare the \u201csoaring costs\u201d of fossil fuel reliance and the need to pivot to cleaner sources of energy, Stiell said, also noting 43C-plus conditions in India, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/26\/high-temperatures-millions-workers-impacted-by-heat-india-asia\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">authorities have reported deaths from heatstroke<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK record for the hottest day in May has been broken twice this week, with stifling conditions on the tube in London.  Photograph: Tolga Akmen\/EPA<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">A temperature of 35.1C (95.2F) was recorded <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2026\/may\/26\/uk-records-highest-ever-may-temperature-for-second-day-in-a-row\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">at Kew Gardens in London on Tuesday<\/a>, the UK\u2019s Met Office said, breaking the 34.8C record set a day earlier. The readings easily surpassed a previous record of 32.8C that was set in 1922 and equalled in 1944.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">France, which was expecting local highs of 39C on Wednesday, also recorded its hottest May day ever on Tuesday, when the national heat index, an average of 30 readings around the country, hit 24.8C, surpassing Monday\u2019s 24.6C \u2013 itself a record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">M\u00e9t\u00e9o-France, the national weather service, said a \u201cheat dome\u201d \u2013 with heat held in place by a high-pressure weather front \u2013 was producing temperatures up to 13C higher than customary for the time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Seventeen of France\u2019s 96 administrative departments, including Paris, were placed on an orange high temperature alert for Thursday, the second highest level, requiring the population to \u201cbe very vigilant and take precautions\u201d. Another 29 were on a more moderate yellow warning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Scientists have said that as the Earth warms, extreme heat events historically confined to high summer were becoming more frequent and more intense, as well as happening earlier and later in the year, putting more people in danger.<\/p>\n<p>Temperatures in Spain could reach 40C, with heat usually seen in July arriving earlier in the year.  Photograph: Pablo Garcia\/The Guardian<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe know beyond a shadow of a doubt that events such as this have been made more likely and more severe due to climate change arising from our emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases,\u201d said Peter Thorne, the director of climate research at Maynooth University in Ireland \u2013 where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2026\/may\/27\/its-getting-hotter-and-its-not-stopping-dealing-with-the-heat-in-five-of-europes-capitals\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a record May high of 28.8C <\/a>was recorded on Monday. \u201cNevertheless, many of the records being set, particularly in the UK and France, are mind-bogglingly crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">French authorities on Tuesday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/may\/26\/deaths-france-linked-record-high-temperatures\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported at least seven deaths<\/a> directly and indirectly linked to the high temperatures \u2013 two of competitors taking part in sporting events, and five drownings as many people sought relief at swimming spots. Authorities in Britain said four teenagers have drowned in England since Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">In Spain, where temperatures could reach 40C this week, an orange weather alert was issued for the Basque Country amid predictions the northern region could reach 37C on Wednesday.
