Months of protests, legal issues and over 4.8 million online rejection signatures were part of the reaction to the premature Royal Caribbean Mahahual project announcement.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1278\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/ogtigj.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122634\"  \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico\u2019s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources head Alicia B\u00e1rcena said Friday that projects like Mahahual should only be announced after they have met the government\u2019s regulatory requirements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">According to B\u00e1rcena, Royal Caribbean announced the project in 2024, but did not submit project paperwork until the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">B\u00e1rcena recalled that the project was announced in October of 2024, but the environmental impact statement was not submitted until December of 2025. She said she remembered warning the Ministries of Tourism and Economy that the project had been announced, but had not been submitted for environmental assessment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI remember discussing that with the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Economy, that the project had not yet been submitted for environmental assessment,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI believe that the important thing is that each project that is going to be announced, is announced only after it has complied with all the procedures and requirements,\u201d she stressed.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1281\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/jffhfh.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-122635\"  \/>The premature announcement lead to protests and legal issues for the government. May 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/riviera-maya-news.com\/government-of-mexico-denies-approval-for-royal-caribbeans-perfect-day-mahahual\/2026.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/riviera-maya-news.com\/government-of-mexico-denies-approval-for-royal-caribbeans-perfect-day-mahahual\/2026.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">B\u00e1rcena announced the Royal Caribbean Perfect Day project at the port of Mahahual would not be approved<\/a>.
