New Zealand’s visitor mix continues to shift toward
\nfamily groups, multi-generational travellers, and
\nextended-family parties from the Pacific and Asia, placing
\nfresh demand on larger rental vehicle categories at major
\nairport gateways. Auckland Airport handled 18.9 million
\npassengers in the calendar year 2025, including 10.4 million
\ninternational travellers, according to the airport’s own
\nreporting. With Chinese visitor arrivals up 41,700 (a 214
\nper cent increase) in February 2026 compared with the same
\nmonth in 2025, group-oriented travel volumes have grown
\nsignificantly faster than overall arrivals.<\/p>\n

The
\ncomposition of these arrivals matters for the rental sector.
\nStats NZ data shows Australian visitors accounted for 1.54
\nmillion arrivals in the year to February 2026, with Pacific
\nIsland, Chinese and other extended-family markets also
\ncontributing strongly. Visitors travelling in groups of five
\nor more increasingly turn to
\nvan hire at Auckland Airport<\/a> for vehicles that can
\ntransport family parties along with luggage in a single
\ntrip. Demand peaks during summer school holidays and Chinese
\nNew Year, when 8, 10 and 12-seater configurations move
\nquickly through major branches.<\/p>\n

South Island arrivals
\nfollow a similar pattern. Dunedin, with its growing tertiary
\nand Pacific Island connections alongside heritage tourism
\nappeal, sees particular demand for multi-passenger vehicles.
\nAccording to IBISWorld, the New Zealand passenger car rental
\nand hiring industry comprises 682 businesses operating
\nnationwide, with an estimated $2.3 billion market size in
\n2025. Visitors planning family-oriented Otago itineraries
\nincreasingly arrange van
\nrental in Dunedin<\/a> to access coastal drives, the Otago
\nPeninsula, and onward journeys into the Catlins, with
\nstandard car driver’s licences sufficient for most vans up
\nto 12 seats.<\/p>\n

Providers such as NZRAC operate branches
\nat Auckland Airport, Dunedin and across both islands,
\nmaintaining van and minibus inventory year-round to
\naccommodate group travel demand. As international arrivals
\ncontinue to track toward MBIE’s target of 3.9 million by
\nend-2026, the structural shift toward larger rental vehicles
\nfor group itineraries is expected to remain a defining
\nfeature of the
\nsector.<\/p>\n
