Palaeontologists refer to it as the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.palwor.2019.01.007\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Furongian<br \/>\ngap<\/a>\u201d. And it\u2019s striking because there is an<br \/>\nexplosion of biodiversity within the fossil record both<br \/>\nimmediately before and after it.    <\/p>\n<p>This decline<br \/>\nhas been considered evidence for a real biological crisis<br \/>\n\u2013 one driven by environmental instability, changing ocean<br \/>\nchemistry, cooling climates, a lack of oxygen in ancient<br \/>\nseas, or a combination of these factors.  <\/p>\n<p>Our new<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1186\/s12915-026-02617-4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a>,<br \/>\npublished in the journal BMC Biology, provides new evidence<br \/>\nfor an alternative idea. The Furongian may not represent a<br \/>\ntrue collapse in biodiversity, but rather a gap in where<br \/>\nscientists have looked and what kinds of rocks have been<br \/>\nstudied. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a reminder of how incomplete our<br \/>\nunderstanding of Earth\u2019s history remains.\n<\/p>\n<p>A rare group of fossils<\/p>\n<p>Advertisement &#8211; scroll to continue reading<\/p>\n<p>We<br \/>\ndescribe a new 500-million-year-old arthropod from Qu\u00e9bec,<br \/>\nCanada. Arthropods are animals with exoskeletons \u2013 that<br \/>\nis, skeletons on the exterior of their bodies. <\/p>\n<p>The<br \/>\nfossil belongs to a rare group of early arthropods related<br \/>\nto the lineage leading to spiders and scorpions.<br \/>\nImportantly, it comes from a geological setting that<br \/>\nscientists have not previously recognised as being notable<br \/>\nfor preserving fossils at this time in Earth\u2019s<br \/>\nhistory.<\/p>\n<p>The fossil itself is named<br \/>\nMagnicornaspis garwoodi. The animal belongs to the<br \/>\ncorcoraniids \u2013 an enigmatic group of early arthropods that<br \/>\nhave broad head shields, segmented bodies, and defensive<br \/>\nspines. <\/p>\n<p>Corcoraniids remain exceptionally rare<br \/>\nglobally. Only a handful of species are known from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/cambrian\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cambrian<\/a><br \/>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/ordovician\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ordovician<\/a><br \/>\nperiods. <\/p>\n<p>Our specimen is unique for its two large<br \/>\nforward-projecting spines extending from the head. These<br \/>\nexaggerated spines distinguish the species from previously<br \/>\nknown <a href=\"https:\/\/peerj.com\/articles\/8879\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">relatives<\/a>. They<br \/>\nsuggest defensive adaptations within the group evolved<br \/>\nearlier than previously recognised.  <\/p>\n<p>Sitting in a<br \/>\nmuseum drawer for decades<\/p>\n<p>The specimen was<br \/>\noriginally collected in 1962 during geological mapping near<br \/>\nSainte-Anne-de-la-Pocati\u00e8re in Qu\u00e9bec. It came from<br \/>\nmudstones within the <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/collections\/collection_2017\/rncan-nrcan\/M44-1997-4.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rivi\u00e8re-du-Loup<br \/>\nFormation<\/a>. This formation was deposited in relatively<br \/>\ndeep marine slope environments during the late Cambrian.\n<\/p>\n<p>This represents quieter offshore conditions where<br \/>\nfine mud settled through the water column. These rocks have<br \/>\nreceived relatively little palaeontological attention,<br \/>\nmaking them ideal for reassessment. <\/p>\n<p>The specimen<br \/>\nsat largely overlooked within the collections of the<br \/>\nSmithsonian National Museum of Natural History in Washington<br \/>\nDC for decades. This highlights one of the most important<br \/>\naspects of palaeontology: major discoveries do not always<br \/>\nemerge directly from fieldwork. <\/p>\n<p>Museum collections<br \/>\ncontain enormous quantities of under-studied material<br \/>\ncollected during geological surveys and expeditions over the<br \/>\npast century. Revisiting these collections with modern<br \/>\ntechniques can fundamentally reshape understanding of<br \/>\nancient ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/735252\/original\/file-20260512-72-8ot72r.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"The facade of a grand building.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1780046410_344_file-20260512-72-8ot72r.jpg\"  \/><\/a><br \/>The<br \/>\nspecimen sat largely overlooked within the collections of<br \/>\nthe Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in<br \/>\nWashington DC for decades.<br \/><a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=191531390\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ajay<br \/>\nSuresh<\/a>, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC<br \/>\nBY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>More treasures awaiting<br \/>\ndiscovery<\/p>\n<p>Our discovery adds to a growing body of<br \/>\nevidence that challenges the notion of a barren late<br \/>\nCambrian world. <\/p>\n<p>Studies from <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.palwor.2018.04.002\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a><br \/>\nand <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.palwor.2006.10.005\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Sweden<\/a><br \/>\nhave documented other well-preserved fossils from about<br \/>\n497\u2013485 million years ago. <\/p>\n<p>Together, these<br \/>\ndiscoveries suggest ecosystems may have remained diverse and<br \/>\necologically complex during this time.  <\/p>\n<p>The new<br \/>\nQu\u00e9bec fossil expands this picture geographically. Our<br \/>\nspecimen demonstrates the ancient Appalachian margin of<br \/>\neastern Laurentia, the ancient continent that included much<br \/>\nof present-day North America and Greenland, was a site of<br \/>\nexcellent fossil preservation.<\/p>\n<p>This broadens the<br \/>\nknown distribution of soft-bodied fossil preservation during<br \/>\nthe interval. It also hints that comparable deposits may<br \/>\nawait discovery elsewhere. <\/p>\n<p>The Furongian gap<br \/>\ntherefore may not represent a biological collapse at all.<br \/>\nInstead, it may partly reflect an \u201canthropogenic bias\u201d<br \/>\nin the fossil record \u2013 a distortion introduced by where<br \/>\nhumans have searched, collected, and studied fossils.\n<\/p>\n<p>Each newly discovered Furongian exceptional fossil<br \/>\nsite narrows this supposed gap. They reveal increasingly<br \/>\nsophisticated ecosystems thriving during the late<br \/>\nCambrian.<\/p>\n<p>Entire groups of organisms \u2013 and<br \/>\npossibly even ecosystems \u2013 may still await discovery<br \/>\nwithin museum drawers or poorly studied rock formations. The<br \/>\nlate Cambrian lasted millions of years across vast ancient<br \/>\noceans. Yet only a tiny fraction of its environments have<br \/>\nbeen systematically explored for soft-bodied preservation.\n<\/p>\n<p>The next major fossil discovery may not come from<br \/>\na newly discovered outcrop in a remote desert.
