(Image: Stewart Armitt)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The exhibition is the largest solo showcase to date by the scottish photographer and features more than 50 works, including previously unseen photographs and rarely displayed digital animations.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Many of the featured works were created between 1995 and 2018 during a period of technological change.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The exhibition examines childhood, learning and imagination through McMurdo\u2019s experimental use of photography and digital technology.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Artist Wendy McMurdo in The Digital Mirror (Image: Stewart Armitt)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  One of the centrepieces is Indeterminate Objects (Classrooms), a large-scale moving image installation combining photography with 3D animated forms inspired by video games such as Minecraft.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The exhibition also pairs McMurdo\u2019s work with pieces from the national collection that influenced her creative practice, including The Skating Minister by Henry Raeburn and sculptures by Eduardo Paolozzi.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  <img   width=\"100%\"\/>Artist Wendy McMurdo in The Digital Mirror. (Image: Stewart Armitt)\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  The exhibition coincides with the bicentenary of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalscottishacademy.org\/?ref=ed_direct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Royal Scottish Academy,<\/a> marking McMurdo\u2019s distinction as the first female photographer elected to the academy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Admission is free and the exhibition will open daily from 10am until 5pm.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Wendy McMurdo said: &#8220;With new legislation focussing on the impact of online culture on children\u2019s lives, now is a particularly apt time to revisit this body of work.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  &#8220;It is an invitation to celebrate play and creativity and to consider the wider implications of new technologies on the lives of young people.&#8221;\n<\/p>\n<p>\n  Ben Harman, senior curator of photography and lead curator of the exhibition at the National Galleries of Scotland, said: &#8220;We\u2019re excited to have this opportunity to celebrate a pioneering body of photographic work by an artist based in Edinburgh with an internationally-renowned reputation in the world of contemporary photography.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Artist Wendy McMurdo in The Digital Mirror.
