Motorcyclists are unhappy big-bike registration costs are increasing to about $816 from July \u2013 up from $540 in 2025 \u2013 with another hike next year to $960.<\/p>\n
With the weather forecast to be largely fine, Tohu said hundreds are expected to join the protest, with motorcycle clubs from as far as Tauranga, Hamilton and the Far North planning to make the trip to Auckland.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think maybe a conservative estimate would be 400 minimum, but probably quite a lot more,\u201d Tohu told the Herald.<\/p>\n
\u201cSupport rides\u201d are also planned in other parts of the country for motorcyclists who \u201cwant to participate but can\u2019t make it up here\u201d.<\/p>\n
Tohu insisted that the safety of the riders and the public is paramount, with protesters told to keep it \u201cdisciplined and lawful\u201d. The group has also been in regular contact with police.<\/p>\n
Police have confirmed they will be present, while NZTA and Auckland Council will be monitoring the impact on the city\u2019s road network.<\/p>\n
MAGNZ to launch representative action lawsuit<\/p>\n
MAGNZ will be using today\u2019s protest to ask motorcycle owners to join a representative action, New Zealand\u2019s version of class action, against ACC\u2019s levy hikes.<\/p>\n
The group is also seeking a court order to stop the next levy increase on July 1.<\/p>\n
Tohu called the levy increases \u201cunlawful\u201d and \u201cunfair\u201d, with the main point of contention being around whether \u201cmotorcycle engine size is a lawful and evidence-based way to risk-rate riders under the ACC Act\u201d.<\/p>\n
Stewart McRobie, ACC deputy chief executive\u202fcorporate\u202fand finance, told the Herald levy rates are considered every three years in consultation with stakeholders, and have been approved by Cabinet.<\/p>\n
\u201cEngine capacity provides a consistent and practical way to group motorcycles that show materially different cost profiles, in line with the Accident Compensation Act\u2019s requirement to set motor vehicle levies based on risk.\u201d<\/p>\n
