“The Art of Banksy: ‘Without Limits'” will be open at Fair Market in Austin from May 29 to Sept. 7, running for exactly 102 days.<\/p>\n

Anonymous British street artist Banksy is making his Austin debut with\u00a0\u201cThe Art of Banksy: \u2018Without Limits\u2019,\u201d<\/a> an exhibition featuring 200 certified original art pieces, photographs, lithographs, sculptures, murals and multimedia installations. The show, located at Fair Market (1100 E. 5th St.), opened May 29 and will run through\u00a0Sept. 7.<\/p>\n The gallery explores the history and influences of the famed street artist, whose identity remains publicly unknown. His satirical, subversive art includes themes of corrupted childhood innocence, politics, greed, war and consumerism \u2014 often through the lens of British and American culture.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n Here are five standout moments from \u201cThe Art of Banksy: \u2018Without Limits.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n 1) \u2018Peckham Rock\u2019 (2005)<\/p>\n Banksy originally snuck “Peckham Rock” into the British Museum in 2005. It stayed on display for days until staff realized it was out of place.<\/p>\n Mars Salazar\/American-Statesman<\/p>\n Banksy\u2019s \u201cPeckham Rock,\u201d also known as \u201cWall Art,\u201d is a lump of concrete with a cave-style painting of a man pushing a shopping cart. In 2005, the hoax relic was smuggled into the British Museum<\/a> and according to the BBC stayed on display in the Roman Britain collection for days before staff realized it didn\u2019t belong. A placard dating the rock to the \u201cpost catatonic era\u201d was also found in the museum, crediting the art to \u201cBansymus Maximus.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cThis finely preserved example of primitive art dates from the Post-Catatonic era and is thought to depict early man venturing towards the out-of-town hunting grounds,\u201d an inscription on the back of the recreated \u201cPeckham Rock\u201d reads. \u201cThe artist responsible is known to have created a substantial body of work across South East of England under the moniker Banksymus Maximus but little else is known about him.\u201d<\/p>\n According to \u201cGenuine Fakes: How Phony Things Teach Us About Real Stuff\u201d<\/a> by Lydia Pyne, Banksy snuck \u201cPeckham Rock\u201d into the British Museum in a plastic bag, wearing a long overcoat and fake beard. Two months earlier, Banksy had also installed a \u201charlequin beetle with airfix weapons\u201d inside the American Museum of Natural History\u2019s Hall of Biodiversity in New York City, entitled \u201cWithus Oragainstus.\u201d<\/p>\n After \u201cPeckham Rock\u201d was removed in 2005, the piece was loaned back to the British Museum as part of the \u201cI Object!\u201d exhibit in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n \u201cMost art of this type has unfortunately not survived. The majority is destroyed by zealous municipal officials who fail to recognize the artistic merit and historical value of daubing on walls,\u201d the inscription said.<\/p>\n 2) Monkeys and rats motif<\/p>\n Monkeys are a big part of Banksy’s art and many are scattered throughout “The Art of Banksy: ‘Without Limits'” on display in Austin.<\/p>\n Mars Salazar\/American-Statesman<\/p>\n Banksy is known for using monkeys and rats as motifs in his artworks.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n The placard next to a signboard recreation of his famous \u201cLaugh Now\u201d (2002) piece said Banksy employs monkeys as a stand-in for humans as social commentary. “Laugh Now” features a downcast chimpanzee wearing a sandwich board that reads, \u201cLaugh now, but one day we\u2019ll be in charge.\u201d According to MyArtBroker<\/a>, the message is one of defiance in the face of oppressive politics.<\/p>\n \u201cYou paint 100 chimpanzees and they still call you a guerrilla artist,\u201d Banksy famously said. A recreation of his huge 2009 painting \u201cDevolved Parliament,\u201d featuring the House of Commons run by chimpanzees, is also on display.<\/p>\n Banksy uses rats to symbolize the pressures that come with society’s “rat race.” This installation is on display at “The Art of Banksy: ‘Without Limits'” in Austin.<\/p>\n Mars Salazar\/American-Statesman<\/p>\n Banksy uses rats to represent the vices, flaws and suffering of the human race. His 2004 painting \u201cGet Out While You Can\u201d features a rat holding up a sign with the title phrase. It is a commentary on the psychological and social pressures that come with the \u201crat race\u201d of modern urban life. \u201cIf you are dirty, insignificant and unloved, then rats are the ultimate role model,\u201d Banksy wrote in his 2005 book \u201cWall and Piece.\u201d<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n According to Banksy Explained<\/a>, the artist connects his rat symbolism with himself. As a graffiti artist, he is often hunted by the authorities like the rats are targeted by pest control. Like rats, these artists also maneuver under the cover of darkness and are seen as nuisances or pests by much of society. By giving rats a voice, he is speaking for people marginalized by society.<\/p>\n \u201cThey exist without permission. They are hated, hunted and persecuted. They live in quiet desperation amongst the filth. And yet they are capable of bringing entire civilizations to their knees,\u201d Banksy said.<\/p>\n 3) \u2018Paris Hilton Debut CD\u2019 (2006)<\/p>\n Banksy made a fake version of Paris Hilton’s debut album “Paris” and distributed it in 48 record stores across the United Kingdom. Hilton said the stunt was “really cool.”<\/p>\n Mars Salazar\/American-Statesman<\/p>\n \u201cThe Art of Banksy: \u2018Without Limits\u2019\u201d explores the artist\u2019s creative intersection with music culture, using CDs and vinyl records as a canvas. \u201cParis Hilton Debut CD\u201d served as commentary on the heiress and reality TV star\u2019s attempt at a music career with her first album \u201cParis\u201d in 2006.<\/p>\n Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n In fall 2006, Banksy placed 500 fake \u201cParis\u201d CDs in 48 different record stores around the United Kingdom. He replaced the inside leaflet with his own cover art and enclosed a disc with remixes by Danger Mouse and tracks titled \u201cWhy Am I Famous?\u201d, \u201cWhat Have I Done?\u201d and \u201cWhat Am I Here For?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n
