To look at this orb&#8217;s gauzy, white light is to see 1,500 years into the past, since that&#8217;s about how long it&#8217;s taken the nebula&#8217;s light to reach Earth. But if you peer a bit deeper into the ball&#8217;s bright center, you&#8217;ll see the fiery ghost of a dead star system \u2014 and a vision of what awaits our stellar neighborhood about <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/when-will-sun-explode\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/when-will-sun-explode\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/when-will-sun-explode\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">5 billion years from now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-e5597ad7-08e8-41f4-8745-d4a6a2d3c8b1-2\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">This view, captured with the National Science Foundation&#8217;s (NSF) Gemini North telescope in Hawaii, is one of the clearest images ever taken of an object known to science for more than 200 years. Astronomer William Herschel (best known for discovering <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/uranus\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/uranus\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/astronomy\/planets\/uranus\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Uranus<\/a>, as well as infrared radiation) was the first to spot the Crystal Ball Nebula, in 1790.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-140ba03b-654a-4607-9831-1cc7095429cb\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Herschel called these types of objects &#8220;planetary nebulas,&#8221; because their spherical shapes looked like planets through his early telescopes. In reality, no planets are involved. Nebulas like these form when stars measuring between roughly one and eight times the mass of the sun reach the ends of their lives and shed their outer layers of gas into space, according to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/esahubble.org\/wordbank\/planetary-nebula\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/esahubble.org\/wordbank\/planetary-nebula\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">European Space Agency<\/a>. As the gas blooms outward, the star emits a final burst of radiation, charging the gas and making it glow \u2014 with reliably <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/25-gorgeous-nebula-photos-that-capture-the-beauty-of-the-universe\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/25-gorgeous-nebula-photos-that-capture-the-beauty-of-the-universe\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/space\/25-gorgeous-nebula-photos-that-capture-the-beauty-of-the-universe\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">spectacular results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">While Herschel initially thought the Crystal Ball&#8217;s glow was powered by a distant cluster of stars, modern telescopes show a single, tight-knit binary star system at its center. These doomed siblings swirl around each other once every nine years, according to an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/news\/noirlab2613\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/noirlab.edu\/public\/news\/noirlab2613\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NSF statement<\/a>, making this the longest-period binary system within a planetary nebula.
