At 10am today, Coastguard Houhora\u2019s vessel Endeavour Rescue \u2013 crewed by four volunteers and two Mang\u014dnui Cruising Club<\/a> members \u2013 reached the stricken yacht and towed it safely into Mang\u014dnui.<\/p>\n

The sailor did not need medical assistance.<\/p>\n

Coastguard Houhora skipper Greg Gemmell said the unit\u2019s newer small-vessel capability proved crucial in the conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe conditions were too rough<\/a> for a big boat, so it was good to have a smaller boat we could launch,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The Coastguard said the successful outcome reflected the sailor\u2019s solid contingency planning. <\/p>\n

The incident also underscored the importance of reliable communication equipment, the Coastguard said.<\/p>\n

The sailor had a VHF radio, mobile phone, and an Emergency Position-Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) \u2013 and had prepared thoroughly for the long-distance offshore race.<\/p>\n
