Astronomers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34576-blue-alien-planet-glass-rain.html#:~:text=figured%20out%20its%20color%20in%202013\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">determined the colour in 2013<\/a> using the Hubble Space Telescope, and the resemblance to a pale blue dot is almost uncanny. It is also a trap.<\/p>\n<p>The assumption underneath that blue, that a blue world is a watery world and therefore something like home, is exactly what HD 189733b dismantles. As\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/rains-of-terror-exoplanet-hd-189733b\/#:~:text=To%20the%20human%20eye%2C%20this%20far%2Doff%20planet%20looks%20bright%20blue.%20But%20any%20space%20traveler%20confusing%20it%20with%20the%20friendly%20skies%20of%20Earth%20would%20be%20badly%20mistaken\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA puts <\/a>it: \u201cTo the human eye, this far-off planet looks bright blue. But any space traveler confusing it with the friendly skies of Earth would be badly mistaken.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The blue does not come from water. HD 189733b is a hot Jupiter, with no ocean to reflect a sky. The colour comes from the atmosphere itself. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/rains-of-terror-exoplanet-hd-189733b\/#:~:text=The%20cobalt%20blue%20color%20comes%20not%20from%20the%20reflection%20of%20a%20tropical%20ocean%2C%20as%20on%20Earth%2C%20but%20rather%20a%20hazy%2C%20blow%2Dtorched%20atmosphere%20containing%20high%20clouds%20laced%20with%20silicate%20particles\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA describes it<\/a> this way: \u201cThe cobalt blue color comes not from the reflection of a tropical ocean, as on Earth, but rather a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere containing high clouds laced with silicate particles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It might look a bit like home but it\u2019s not so hospitable. <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/exoplanets\/nasa-hubble-finds-a-true-blue-planet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA puts the temperature<\/a> at nearly 2,000 degrees during the day!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then there is the wind. A University of Warwick team led by <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/universe\/exoplanets\/5400mph-winds-discovered-hurtling-around-planet-outside-solar-system\/#:~:text=This%20is%20the%20first%2Dever%20weather%20map%20from%20outside%20of%20our%20solar%20system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tom Louden<\/a> measured air moving from the planet\u2019s dayside to its nightside at extraordinary speed.As Louden said: \u201cThis is the first-ever weather map from outside of our solar system. Whilst we have previously known of wind on exoplanets, we have never before been able to directly measure and map a weather system.\u201d\u00a0The figure that came out of that work is the one that sticks. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/rains-of-terror-exoplanet-hd-189733b\/#:~:text=Its%20winds%20blow%20up%20to%205%2C400%20mph%20(2%20km%2Fs)%20at%20seven%20times%20the%20speed%20of%20sound%2C%20whipping%20all%20would%2Dbe%20travelers%20in%20a%20sickening%20spiral%20around%20the%20planet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">NASA describes<\/a> winds that \u201cblow up to 5,400 mph (2 km\/s) at seven times the speed of sound, whipping all would-be travelers in a sickening spiral around the planet.\u201d Combine that with a sky of molten silicate and you get the planet\u2019s signature: possible horizontal rain made of glass. NASA, in its Halloween-themed framing, calls getting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-article\/rains-of-terror-exoplanet-hd-189733b\/#:~:text=And%20getting%20caught%20in%20the%20rain%20on%20this%20planet%20is%20more%20than%20an%20inconvenience%3B%20it%27s%20death%20by%20a%20thousand%20cuts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">caught in that rain<\/a> \u201cmore than an inconvenience; it\u2019s death by a thousand cuts.\u201d Please note that this glass-rain picture is an inference drawn from the temperature and wind data rather than a directly imaged event, best read as the likely consequence of what has been measured.<\/p>\n<p>It would be easy to file this planet under the gallery of hostile worlds and move on. HD 189733b earns its place in the literature for a quieter reason. It is one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1409.4000?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">most heavily studied<\/a> exoplanets we have, which is why it could be measured in this much detail in the first place. It became the proving ground for techniques, mapping a wind system and reading a visible colour, that now get pointed at fainter and stranger targets.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the deeper use of the planet is as a correction to a habit of mind. The search for worlds like ours leans, understandably, on familiar signals: the right size, the right distance from a star, a hint of blue. HD 189733b satisfies one of those cues and fails every test that follows. A colour that reads as ocean on Earth reads as molten glass here, and the only way to tell the two apart is to keep measuring past the first impression.
