Recently, it has re-emerged as a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/28539734\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">natural option for fuelling exercise<\/a>, with some social media users claiming it\u2019s the perfect thing to eat before a workout if you need an energy boost.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, Sebastian Sawe, the first man to run a sub two-hour marathon, fuelled up before his race with <a href=\"https:\/\/news.sky.com\/story\/from-super-shoes-to-bread-with-honey-the-man-who-made-london-marathon-history-13537103\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bread and honey<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Research actually does suggest <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31336992\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">honey can work comparably<\/a> to commercial products such as energy drinks and gels. But where it may be most beneficial is when it\u2019s used as a recovery tool.<\/p>\n<p>Honey and energy<\/p>\n<p>Honey is <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7778149\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">primarily made up of carbohydrates<\/a> \u2013 more specifically, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK576428\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">glucose and fructose<\/a> which are simple sugars. These carbs provide a rapid and accessible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK459280\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">source of energy<\/a>, which is particularly useful during exercise when the body <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bhf.org.uk\/how-you-can-help\/events\/nutrition-for-sporting-events\/carbohydrates-and-exercise\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">needs fuel quickly<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Our bodies <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30969624\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">store carbohydrate as glycogen<\/a> in the muscles and liver. These stores are depleted during moderate\u2011to\u2011high intensity exercise \u2013 especially during prolonged bouts of physical activity lasting longer than 60 minutes. When glycogen levels fall, <a href=\"https:\/\/physoc.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1113\/jphysiol.2013.251629\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fatigue increases and performance declines<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Consuming carbohydrates before or during exercise ensures energy is available, allowing us to sustain exercise for longer.<\/p>\n<p>The science behind honey\u2019s role in exercise is therefore straightforward: it supplies fast\u2011acting energy when needed. However, what is more interesting is that honey contains a natural combination of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31166604\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">both glucose and fructose<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>These sugars are absorbed through <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33413911\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">different pathways in the gut<\/a>, allowing them to be used simultaneously. This increases the amount of carbohydrates absorbed, puts less strain on the gut, and helps sustain the amount of energy being delivered to working muscles during workouts. This may also potentially <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19402743\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">delay fatigue<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>This science is also behind why many sports drinks and energy gels contain multiple carbohydrate sources to <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20574242\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">maximise fuelling efficiency<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Research has shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31166604\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">consuming both glucose and fructose<\/a> together enhances the amount of carbohydrate your body is able to use for energy compared to a single sugar source. Honey therefore represents a natural version of this evidence\u2011based approach. <\/p>\n<p>In practical terms, one generous tablespoon of honey provides around 20 grams of carbohydrate. This is comparable to the amount of carbs found in a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31336992\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">commercial energy gel<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Consuming around 1tbsp or 1.5tbsp of honey before training can top up glycogen stores, particularly in the liver. This can be important if training in the morning when liver glycogen stores are <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/21660838\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lower from an overnight fasting period<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But while honey can help provide the body with the energy it needs during a workout, whether honey actually boosts performance is less certain. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/20175433\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Previous research<\/a> found that using honey as a drink given before and during 75 minutes of football training (a total of around four heaped tablespoons per participant) was not found to have improved performance.<\/p>\n<p>A commercial sports drink containing the same amount of carbohydrates was also tested. Neither the sports drink nor the honey proved to have any performance benefit over the placebo (water only) \u2013 showing that both carb drinks had no effect.<\/p>\n<p>However, other studies have shown that honey does perform similarly to other carbohydrate sources and may improve performance. <\/p>\n<p>For instance, a study which <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15320674\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave cyclists 15g of honey<\/a> every 16km over a 64km time trial resulted in cyclists having greater power output in the final 16km compared to those who were given a placebo. <\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A bowlful of honey, which a wooden spoon emerges from.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260529-71-anagcj.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              Honey may be as good as sport gels for providing quick energy.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shutterstock.com\/image-photo\/golden-honey-drizzling-wooden-dipper-into-2571360277?trackingId=dc88656c-855e-4bc1-ac3f-db5b1a41327c&amp;listId=searchResults\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ZeiMomArt\/ Shutterstock<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Additionally, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/40675563\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a recent study in trained cyclists<\/a> who were given 90g of honey per hour over three hours of cycling found that performance was comparable to traditional sports gels.<\/p>\n<p>So while honey might not boost your performance over other types of carbs, it may work just as well. <\/p>\n<p>Additional benefits<\/p>\n<p>Where honey shines may well be in its role in recovery. Research has shown that consuming a honey\u2011based drink after exercise helps <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4594138\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">maintain higher blood glucose levels<\/a>, which can affect subsequent performance \u2013 particularly when the body is under extra stress (such as when it\u2019s hot).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4594138\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In one study<\/a>, ten recreational runners performed two one-hour runs in the heat, with a two-hour rest in between. After the first run, they were given a drink containing honey. The researchers found that the runners were able to run around 10% further in the second trial after consuming honey than they had run during the first trial. <\/p>\n<p>This suggests that honey may be particularly effective at restoring energy between bouts of exercise. As honey contains both glucose and fructose, this can help <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31166604\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">replenish the body\u2019s energy stores<\/a> quickly. <\/p>\n<p>Beyond its carbohydrate content, honey also contains small amounts of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and important plant compounds such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0165993609001216\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">flavonoids<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30208664\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">phenolic acids<\/a>. These compounds may have <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/41640994\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">antioxidant, antimicrobial and potentially antiviral effects<\/a>, which may be particularly beneficial for athletes during stressful training periods. <\/p>\n<p>However, not all honeys are the same. Their <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8405766\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">taste, texture, sugar composition and contents vary<\/a> depending on factors such as flower source, climate and processing methods. For instance, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3771408\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Malaysian and Manuka honey<\/a> contain higher levels of anti-bacterial and anti\u2011inflammatory compounds, which could better support recovery and immune function.<\/p>\n<p>Some research also indicates <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33441127\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">certain types of honey<\/a> can influence <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33641965\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inflammatory signalling pathways<\/a>, potentially helping regulate the response. This means honey may reduce muscle soreness and improve recovery, offering more than just a source of energy.<\/p>\n<p>However, there\u2019s currently little evidence to suggest that one type of honey is significantly superior to another as an exercise fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Based on current evidence, honey does appear to be comparable to other sports products such as energy gels.
