{"id":456008,"date":"2026-06-01T21:28:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-01T21:28:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/456008\/"},"modified":"2026-06-01T21:28:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-01T21:28:11","slug":"rocket-goes-boom-satellite-cameras-zoom-explosive-blue-origin-damage-is-visible-from-space","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/456008\/","title":{"rendered":"Rocket goes boom, satellite cameras zoom: Explosive Blue Origin damage is visible from space"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-a16cb979-265d-41b7-be90-96f3ae5c35cb\">The dust has settled in the aftermath of last week&#8217;s giant New Glenn rocket explosion, which shook Florida&#8217;s Space Coast and the space industry itself.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin was conducting a fueling test on May 28, ahead of New Glenn&#8217;s fourth mission, when a yet unknown event led to the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/blue-origins-new-glenn-rocket-explodes-in-massive-fireball-during-prelaunch-test\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/blue-origins-new-glenn-rocket-explodes-in-massive-fireball-during-prelaunch-test\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/blue-origins-new-glenn-rocket-explodes-in-massive-fireball-during-prelaunch-test\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">total destruction of the vehicle<\/a> and significant damage to the ground infrastructure at Launch Complex-36 (LC-36). No one was hurt in the incident, but the loss dealt a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/a-pretty-significant-setback-how-blue-origins-rocket-explosion-affects-nasas-moon-plans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">serious blow<\/a> to Blue Origin&#8217;s ability to meet NASA&#8217;s timeline to support the Artemis missions to return astronauts to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the moon<\/a>, and further stalls the growth of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/fcc-approves-amazon-constellation-kuiper\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/fcc-approves-amazon-constellation-kuiper\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/fcc-approves-amazon-constellation-kuiper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amazon Leo<\/a> wireless internet constellation meant to compete against SpaceX&#8217;s <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/spacex-starlink-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Starlink<\/a> satellite network.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a16cb979-265d-41b7-be90-96f3ae5c35cb-2\">The explosion caused extensive damage to LC-36, Blue Origin&#8217;s only launchpad capable of supporting a rocket as large as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40455-new-glenn-rocket.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New Glenn<\/a>. So extensive, in fact, that the damage can be measured from <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24870-what-is-space.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space<\/a>, as seen in images captured by Planet Lab&#8217;s SkySat-C9 satellite, and processed by <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/spacefromspace.com\/spaceport-images\/cape-canaveral-20260531\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/spacefromspace.com\/spaceport-images\/cape-canaveral-20260531\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Spacefromspace<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-23cfa81a-075f-429e-8537-97c3163f465d\">Satellite imagery shows charred vegetation stretched out in nearly every direction around the half-mile-wide (1 kilometer) New Glenn pad. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19584-blue-origin-quiet-plans-for-spaceships.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Blue Origin<\/a> leases LC-36, which is located at <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33926-cape-canaveral.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cape Canaveral Space Force Station<\/a> (CCSFS). Visible damage across the scorched facility, now in ruin, can be seen on the launch tower, flame trench and other support systems.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin is currently working out how to repair the damage. &#8220;We will start clearing the pad soon and have a good rebuild plan in place,&#8221; Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/davill\/status\/2060760334869188846\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/davill\/status\/2060760334869188846\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">post to X<\/a> on May 31. Limp and Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos toured LC-36 with NASA administrator Jared Isaacman on May 30, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2060523381699612973\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NASAAdmin\/status\/2060523381699612973\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">according to Isaacman<\/a>, who promised the agency&#8217;s full support in the investigation ahead.<\/p>\n<p>New Glenn is one of the rockets <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> is counting on to land astronauts on the moon during future Artemis missions. But the restoration of LC-36 will very likely delay that launch for several months. That will have ripple effects for Blue Origin&#8217;s readiness to supply a Blue Moon vehicle for the upcoming <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/artemis-3-moon-landing-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 3<\/a> mission to launch the lunar landers to <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Earth<\/a> orbit to practice rendezvous and docking maneuvers with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27824-orion-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Orion spacecraft<\/a>. That, in turn, could either delay Artemis 3 or create an untenable timeline for Blue Moon to gain its certification to carry astronauts in time for the first Artemis mission lunar landing on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/artemis\/nasa-is-overhauling-its-artemis-program-what-does-that-mean-for-humanitys-return-to-the-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis 4<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27576-private-orbital-sciences-rocket-explosion.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27576-private-orbital-sciences-rocket-explosion.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27576-private-orbital-sciences-rocket-explosion.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antares rocket exploded and damaged its launchpad in 2014<\/a>, it was nearly two years until the affected facilities at NASA&#8217;s Wallops Space Flight Center <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34416-stunning-antares-rocket-return-to-flight-launch.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34416-stunning-antares-rocket-return-to-flight-launch.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34416-stunning-antares-rocket-return-to-flight-launch.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">supported another launch<\/a>. <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18853-spacex.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">SpaceX<\/a> suffered a similar static test fire accident to New Glenn&#8217;s in September 2016, when a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18962-spacex-falcon-9.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Falcon 9<\/a> rocket exploded at CCSFS&#8217;s Launch Complex-40 leading up to the launch of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33929-spacex-falcon-9-rocket-explodes-on-launch-pad.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33929-spacex-falcon-9-rocket-explodes-on-launch-pad.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/33929-spacex-falcon-9-rocket-explodes-on-launch-pad.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Amos-6 communications satellite<\/a>. SpaceX spent just over a year repairing its facilities there, launching a mission from LC-40 in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39030-spacex-launch-pad-first-flight-since-explosion.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39030-spacex-launch-pad-first-flight-since-explosion.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/39030-spacex-launch-pad-first-flight-since-explosion.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">December 2017<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Blue Origin hasn&#8217;t come out with an estimated repair time for LC-16, and has yet to release an overall assessment of the damage. Following his tour with Isaacman, Bezos voiced his determination for the company to press onward, and his appreciation to the administrator for NASA&#8217;s support. &#8220;Thank you for being here today,&#8221; Bezos said in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffBezos\/status\/2060559650907460086\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JeffBezos\/status\/2060559650907460086\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow\">a post on X<\/a>. &#8220;We will get back to flight, and we will get to the moon.
