\u201cWe attended the registered owner\u2019s address in \u014cpononi where a burglary had occurred, but the woman was not present, increasing our concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n

A police patrol car found a man walking along State Highway 14, between Whang\u0101rei and Kaipara. <\/p>\n

Johnston said he was in possession of several items of interest, and taken into custody.<\/p>\n

Johnston said police made further inquiries at an address in Whirinaki overnight and found a woman dead.<\/p>\n

A homicide investigation was then launched. <\/p>\n

Johnston said a scene examination would continue at the address <\/a>today, and police would carry out further inquiries in \u014cpononi. <\/p>\n

Formal identification of the woman is underway. <\/p>\n

Johnston said the woman\u2019s family last heard from her on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe woman had last been in contact with wh\u0101nau on Sunday night, and what has taken place is simply a tragedy,\u201d Johnston said.<\/p>\n

The man appeared in court this morning . <\/p>\n

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear in the High Court at Whang\u0101rei on June 19, where he was expected to enter a plea. <\/p>\n
