{"id":456676,"date":"2026-06-02T07:14:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:14:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/456676\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T07:14:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T07:14:27","slug":"dbs-announces-new-app-feature-to-turn-android-phones-into-contactless-payment-terminals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/456676\/","title":{"rendered":"DBS announces new app feature to turn Android phones into contactless payment terminals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">SINGAPORE &#8211; Singaporeans and tourists can now find it easier to pay for goods with one tap following DBS Bank\u2019s introduction of a new feature that will allow merchants to turn any Android smartphone into a contactless payment terminal.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201ctap-to-phone\u201d feature for businesses allows merchants to accept credit and debit card payments conveniently through their smartphones, via the bank\u2019s digital cash collection app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">This means that customers, including tourists who may lack access to compatible digital wallets or prefer card payments over cash, can now access a wider range of payment options through the new feature, which merchants can access through the DBS MAX app.<\/p>\n<p>In December, tech giant Apple announced the launch of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/apple-tap-to-pay-now-available-on-iphones-in-singapore?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\">similar Tap to Pay function<\/a> on iPhones in Singapore, allowing merchants to accept quick payments via contactless credit and debit cards, Apple Pay and other digital wallets using only their iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">In its announcement, DBS said its move was to help merchants keep pace with the growing demand for cashless transactions, in line with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/multimedia\/graphics\/2026\/04\/payment-methods\/index.html?ref=inline-article\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" class=\"gap-x-04 items-center inline text-primary-60 select-auto\" aria-label=\"link\" target=\"_blank\" data-testid=\"custom-link\">Singapore\u2019s move towards being a \u201ccash-lite\u201d society<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">\u201cAs the first Singapore bank to offer such a feature, DBS is now able to provide a full suite of digital payment solutions to merchants \u2013 including contactless cards and QR code payments via DBS PayLah! and PayNow \u2013 through one application, helping them streamline their banking and payment channels,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Citing accounting firm PwC\u2019s findings from a 2026 study of Singapore\u2019s payment ecosystem, DBS highlighted that the digital payments market is projected to grow to more than US$480 billion by 2030. Credit and debit cards remain the dominant payment method, with 72 per cent share of transaction value in 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">According to DBS, merchants can enable the new feature in just three steps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">To complete a transaction through the feature, customers can tap their physical or contactless card on a merchant\u2019s phone that is installed with the DBS MAX app. NFC-based payment systems like Apple Pay, Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet are accepted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-body-baseline-regular text-primary\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-annotation-test-id\">Tesy Mathew, the bank\u2019s Group Head of Cash Product Management, Global Transaction Services, said: \u201cBusinesses can transact in a more efficient and cost-effective manner and scale confidently to capture new opportunities.
