According to Politico and other media, David Sacks, the Silicon Valley venture capitalist who served as Trump\u2019s AI and crypto tsar, called the President to warn that the measure would slow innovation and hurt the US in its AI race with China \u2013 blindsiding White House staff who believed Sacks supported the order.<\/p>\n
Sacks wrote on X last week that \u201cunnecessary regulation is the biggest threat to innovation in America\u201d, adding that winning the AI race required clearing \u201cbureaucratic hurdles\u201d from state legislatures and \u201cwoke\u201d Washington politicians.<\/p>\n

The order also instructs the Treasury, the National Security Agency and the CISA cybersecurity agency to form an \u201cAI cybersecurity clearinghouse\u201d in voluntary collaboration with industry and critical infrastructure operators to identify software vulnerabilities and find ways to fix them.<\/p>\n

US President Joe Biden\u2019s 2023 order required AI companies to share safety test results with the Government and leaned heavily on voluntary commitments \u2013 already a light-touch approach that fell short of what many experts had called for.<\/p>\n
By contrast, the European Union\u2019s AI Act \u2013 which entered into force in 2024 \u2013 sets binding rules for high-risk AI systems, including mandatory transparency requirements and, for the most powerful models, obligations around safety testing and incident reporting.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an important step in the right direction,\u201d Anthony Aguirre, chief executive of Future of Life Institute, which advocates for AI safety, said.<\/p>\n
\u201cVoluntary frameworks are not enough, however\u201d and the Government must be empowered \u201cto block the release of systems that pose an unacceptable national security risk\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n
