{"id":457858,"date":"2026-06-02T23:10:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-02T23:10:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/457858\/"},"modified":"2026-06-02T23:10:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-02T23:10:11","slug":"paper-claims-the-asteroid-japans-probe-is-approaching-is-actually-a-derelict-spacecraft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/457858\/","title":{"rendered":"Paper Claims the &#8220;Asteroid&#8221; Japan&#8217;s Probe Is Approaching Is Actually a Derelict Spacecraft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Sign up to see the future, today<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Can\u2019t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech<\/p>\n<p class=\"pw-incontent-excluded article-paragraph skip\">After successfully <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/hayabusa2-asteroid-ryugu-collect-samples\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">rendezvousing<\/a> with near-Earth asteroid Ryugu in June 2018 and <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/space\/samples-ryugu-asteroid-dna-rna-building-blocks\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sending a sampled cache of rocks<\/a> back to Earth, Japan\u2019s Hayabusa2 spacecraft is now making its long journey to its next destination, a tiny and rapidly spinning asteroid dubbed 1998 KY26.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">The spacecraft is expected to reach the mysterious space rock by July 2031, giving scientists plenty of time to come up with theories as to what it could find once it gets there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">1998 KY26 is an intriguing new candidate for an entirely new class of objects. In 2017, interstellar visitor \u2018Oumuamua \u2014 the first object from beyond the solar system to have ever been observed \u2014 inspired scientists to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/comets\/nasa-researchers-discover-more-dark-comets\/\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">categorize it as a \u201cdark comet<\/a>,\u201d a class of asteroids that share some behaviors with comets. (A brief refresher: asteroids are lumps of rock, ice or dust that orbit the Sun but are too small to be classified as planets, while comets are \u201cdirty snowballs\u201d that release gases to form a tail behind them as they pass by the Sun.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Scientists suggest 1998 KY26 could also be a dark comet, making Hayabusa2\u2019s visit five years from now an intriguing opportunity to get a closer look.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">But according to Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, who has spent years pondering the nature of \u2018Oumuamua and its unusual behavior, 1998 KY26 could be something else entirely. As detailed in a <a href=\"https:\/\/lweb.cfa.harvard.edu\/~loeb\/HCL1.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">yet-to-be-peer-reviewed paper<\/a>, Loeb and his colleagues suggest the object could instead be a long-lost relic of the Soviet space program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cIn particular, we identify it as potentially a relic of a historical Russian mission to Mars, the Phobos 1 probe, which suffered a failure 2 months after the launch in July 1988, due to upload of a faulty command,\u201d Loeb explained in a <a href=\"https:\/\/avi-loeb.medium.com\/is-the-dark-comet-1998-ky26-the-spacecraft-phobos-1-304169bce8a2\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Phobos 1 failed to send back a signal in August 1988 due to what later turned out to be a typo \u2014 a missing hyphen \u2014 in a command that shut down crucial systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">In their latest paper, Loeb and his colleagues suggest that the probe\u2019s thruster firings may have put it in a \u201csimilar\u201d orbit to 1998 KY26\u2019s, and that the \u201ctwo orbits converge and are statistically compatible.\u201d The researchers also argue that the defunct spacecraft and dark comet share roughly the same size and a \u201cquite elongated\u201d shape.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Still, the hypothesis is quite a stretch, given the vastness of space. However, in his blog post, Loeb argued that scientists should nonetheless extend their \u201ctraining data set to include not just rocks and icebergs but also the space objects launched by humans over the past 69 years\u201d just in case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">If 1998 KY26 does turn out to be technological in nature, Loeb argued that the finding could support his controversial theory that <a href=\"https:\/\/futurism.com\/avi-loeb-and-the-great-unknown\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">\u2018Oumuamua may have also been a piece of technology<\/a> sent to us by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">\u201cI wonder whether the mainstream of comet experts will acknowledge that\u00a01I\/\u2019Oumuamua\u00a0may have not been a natural \u2018dark comet\u2019 if it becomes clear that their so-called \u2018dark comet\u2019\u00a01998 KY26 is technological in origin, beyond any reasonable doubt,\u201d he pondered.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-paragraph skip\">Nobody knows for sure what Hayabusa2 will find.
