Credit: NASA\/JPL-Caltech\/Harvard\/Moore et al.<\/p>\n<p>Earth\u2019s magnetic field plays a key role in protecting life on our planet from the dangers of space.<\/p>\n<p>That includes protecting us from massive solar storms erupting from the Sun and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/cosmic-rays\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cosmic rays<\/a> coming from deep space.<\/p>\n<p>Other planets in our Solar System like Jupiter and Saturn have magnetic fields, too, but astronomers had never been able to directly measure the strength of magnetic fields at planets orbiting distant stars \u2013 until now.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"636\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/solar-wind-earth.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration showing the solar wind hitting Earth's magnetic field.\" class=\"wp-image-155453\"\/>Illustration showing the solar wind hitting Earth&#8217;s magnetic field.<\/p>\n<p>To make the discovery, astronomers used two powerful ground-based telescopes, the European Southern Observatory\u2019s Very Large Telescope and the Gemini North telescope.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This breakthrough opens a completely new window on exoplanet research. It\u2019s the first time we can compare the magnetic environments of other worlds,&#8221; says Julia Seidel, astronomer at the Laboratoire Lagrange, Observatoire de la C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur, France and lead author of the study published today in Nature Astronomy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a key step toward ultimately understanding which planets can stay alive, keep their water, and perhaps even, one day, host life as we know it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Animation showing a magnetic field around an exoplanet. Cal\u00e7ada<br \/>\nMeasuring cosmic hurricanes<\/p>\n<p>The team began by measuring wind speeds on seven <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/exoplanets\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a> orbiting different stars.<\/p>\n<p>Each of the exoplanets is a gas giant, like Jupiter, and each is tidally locked to its host star.<\/p>\n<p>That means the same side of the planet always faces the star, the way <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skyatnightmagazine.com\/space-science\/why-always-see-same-side-moon\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on Earth we always see the same side of the Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One side of the planet is constantly experiencing daytime, getting blasted by scorching heat from the host star. The other side is stuck in freezing-cold nighttime.<\/p>\n<p>That discrepancy generates extremely strong wind speeds, with winds ranging across the exoplanets from speeds of around 4,480 mph (7,200 km\/h) to over 15,500 mph (25,000 km\/h).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/exoplanets-magnetic-field.jpg\" alt=\"Illustration showing magnetic field around an exoplanet. Cal\u00e7ada<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In the beginning we set out to check if the atmospheric winds behaved the same way for all hot planets,\u201d says Seidel.<\/p>\n<p>But when the team looked more closely at how the wind speed on each planet varied with its temperature, they discovered a pattern.<\/p>\n<p>The hotter the planet, the slower the wind.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is totally counter intuitive because, all things being equal, hot planets have more energy to accelerate the winds,&#8221; says study co-author Vivien Parmentier, a professor at the Laboratoire Lagrange.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Something must happen that slows down the wind speeds for hotter objects.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/24-12-12-Mars_vs_Earth_Solar_Wind_1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"Earth's (right) magnetic field protects our atmosphere from being stripped by radiation from the Sun, but Mars's field is much weaker. Credit: NASA<br \/>\nSo what&#8217;s going on?<\/p>\n<p>The team say the likely solution is the presence of planet-wide magnetic fields, because such fields can work as a brake, slowing down the motion of charged particles in the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>Using the data, the team could then estimate the strength of the magnetic field in each of the exoplanets.<\/p>\n<p>They found the magnetic fields to be similar in strength to what we see in our Solar System: four times as strong as Saturn&#8217;s magnetic field or about half the strength of Jupiter&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"555\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Jupiter-aurora-cf3b2c8.jpg\" alt=\"Aurora at Jupiter's north pole, as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope.
