Local business owner David Perdue III has some advice for other entrepreneurs:\u00a0\u201cBe grateful for the problems you do have.\u201d<\/p>\n

Perdue shared that advice at The Daily Memphian\u2019s Small Business Seminar on Thursday, Sept. 18. One of four panelists, he was joined by\u00a0Andre Ford, co-owner of Campbell & Ford Construction;\u00a0and\u00a0Lloyd and Shannon Finks, owners of concierge medical practice Z\u00fcpMed<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Perdue began doing yard work in high school as a side hustle, continuing after graduation with a local landscaping company. After a few years, he decided to start his own business.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Perdue said one of the biggest lessons he learned was that having a purpose and passion for the work \u2014\u00a0\u201cto beautify the city and help others grow\u201d \u2014 keeps him going and growing his business, especially during challenging times.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cMaintaining a good perspective through all those (adversities) ends up being incredibly beneficial,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cThe ability to learn, even when pain is your teacher, is a gift.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ford, co-owner of Campbell & Ford Construction, also talked about having a passion, a\u00a0\u201czeal\u201d that fuels one to learn and grow.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re going to be in business, you have to be doing something that you love doing,\u201d Ford said.\u00a0\u201cIf you\u2019re in business just to make money, you\u2019re not going to last long.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ford said it\u2019s easy for him to wake up every day and go to work because he loves what he\u2019s doing and prioritizes a work\/life balance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

To grow his business, Ford said he took risks, which can generate rewards. But, he said, having a cash safety net is necessary if the risks don\u2019t pay off or unexpected circumstances arise.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen it\u2019s good, you stack hay in the barn; you invest; you make sure that you set yourself up for bad things to happen in the future because they will happen,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Ford also said small business owners need a \u201cBAIL\u201d team \u2014 banker, accountant, insurance agent and lawyer \u2014 of people they know on a personal level because those people\u00a0can make or break a business if not tended to correctly.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With an incoming Target and Academy Sports, Millington has hit the retail \u2018bullseye\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n

Lloyd and Shannon Finks, owners of Z\u00fcpMed, said that starting and keeping a business going sometimes requires pivoting to new ideas.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cEverything doesn\u2019t always turn out the way that you hope and that you plan, so you pivot and work hard,\u201d Shannon Finks said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Finks\u2019 concierge medical practice opened its doors in 2020, just before the city was shut down due to the pandemic. So, the couple transformed the facility into a hub for COVID-19 vaccinations and urgent care visits.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Now a direct primary care and urgent care facility focused on hospitality once more, Z\u00fcpmed operates on a cash-only basis and doesn\u2019t\u00a0accept insurance.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that the traditional health care system is flawed and has room to grow,\u201d Shannon Finks said.\u00a0\u201cWe feel that it\u2019s very transactional, impersonal and rushed. We wanted to improve upon this model.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The Finks said that both the service, or the \u201cdelivery of your product,\u201d and the hospitality, or \u201chow you deliver\u201d that product, are needed to cultivate a good work and health care environment.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But all three companies had something in common.\u00a0<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

\u201cI think something that really struck a chord, listening to our first two speakers, was the commitment to the city of Memphis,\u201d Lloyd Finks said.\u00a0\u201cFrom the beginning, we don\u2019t want to be closed. What we want to be is open. We take great pride in taking care of a broad range of people.\u201d<\/p>\n
