{"id":462768,"date":"2026-06-05T18:29:14","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T18:29:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/462768\/"},"modified":"2026-06-05T18:29:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T18:29:14","slug":"astrophotographer-captures-colossal-godzilla-plasma-cloud-stalking-the-edge-of-the-sun-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/462768\/","title":{"rendered":"Astrophotographer captures colossal &#8216;Godzilla&#8217; plasma cloud stalking the edge of the sun (video)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-687610f4-b06f-47d5-91f5-6503b51a32a6\">Astrophotographer Mark Johnston has captured two mesmerizing views of giant solar prominences \u2014 towering clouds of glowing plasma suspended above the sun by magnetic fields.<\/p>\n<p>The first video, captured on May 22, 2026, shows a remarkable prominence releasing streams of material that appear to fall back toward <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sun<\/a> as coronal rain. (Image credit: Mark Johnston)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-c8705a7f-3d3b-4822-914e-c513ea3cd09c\">&#8220;The movement you see may look like wind effects, but it&#8217;s mostly caused by magnetic fields and, to a lesser extent, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/classical-gravity.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gravity<\/a>. (Image credit: Mark Johnston)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-a5fd34f7-8a24-406e-b579-6284c1573238\">While the prominence resembles a fiery eruption, Johnston notes that looks can be deceiving.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not flame. There&#8217;s no fire on the Sun. Just as your stove can glow red-hot and not be on fire, the hydrogen on the Sun is so hot it glows too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b7ab6e93-8ff7-4ae2-9563-41c3f5aeea81\">Solar prominences are immense structures of superheated plasma that extend outward from the sun&#8217;s surface while remaining tethered by magnetic fields. When viewed against the dark backdrop of space, they can appear as glowing arches, curtains or towering clouds along the sun&#8217;s edge. The same structures are known as filaments when seen against the bright face of the sun, where they appear as dark ribbons because they are cooler and denser than the surrounding material.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-observing-safety-guide\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">viewing the sun<\/a> without the right equipment can be dangerous.
