The heart of the summer movie season is upon us, and June is set to feature some of the biggest new releases of the year. From \u201cDisclosure Day\u201d to \u201cSupergirl,\u201d there will be plenty of blockbusters to feast upon this month (assuming anyone takes a break from seeing \u201cBackrooms\u201d and \u201cObsession\u201d<\/a> long enough to try something new).<\/p>\n

But for the nights when you can\u2019t make it out to a theater, Netflix is there for you. The streamer is rolling out several high-profile original films in June, including the Jennifer Lopez-Brett Goldstein vehicle \u201cOffice Romance\u201d<\/a> and the Mexican stop-motion film \u201cI Am Frankelda.\u201d<\/a> Its repertory offerings are also as strong as ever, with everything from major studio franchises to recent Oscar darlings.<\/p>\n

Nothing says summer quite like a star-studded rom-com, and Netflix\u2019s flagship original release this month boasts the splashy pairing of Jennifer Lopez and Brett Goldstein. The \u201cTed Lasso\u201d hyphenate co-wrote the film, in which he plays a corporate lawyer who falls for his latest client, a powerful airline CEO played by Lopez. It has all the makings of a throwback cinematic love story that could make for a perfect summer comfort viewing.<\/p>\n

It almost feels like cheating to recommend Coen brothers comedies in this context, as the best ones are almost certain to be among any cinephile\u2019s most-rewatched selections. But popularity does not change the fact that \u201cThe Big Lebowski\u201d is a pitch-perfect movie, capturing the contradictions of \u201990s America that gave way to today\u2019s absurdity inside the framework of an addictive comedy. Even if you\u2019ve watched it 100 times, there\u2019s a good chance it will be exactly what you\u2019re craving at some point this month, and Netflix will be there for you.<\/p>\n

Michael B. Jordan is currently on top of the world. The superstar just won his first Oscar for \u201cSinners,\u201d and is preparing to release his sophomore directorial effort, \u201cThe Thomas Crown Affair,\u201d next spring and star in Joseph Kosinski\u2019s \u201cMiami Vice\u201d reboot. If you still can\u2019t get enough of him, all three entries in his flagship franchise are coming to Netflix this month. From the first \u201cCreed,\u201d which established Jordan and Ryan Coogler as Hollywood A-listers, through \u201cCreed III,\u201d which made Jordan a director in his own right, the trilogy is always ripe for a rewatch.<\/p>\n

2026 is shaping up to be one of the rare years where we don\u2019t get a new Yorgos Lanthimos movie starring Emma Stone, but anyone going through withdrawal can revisit their best film to date this month. \u201cPoor Things\u201d is a masterpiece on several levels, from its lushly synthetic production design to Emma Stone\u2019s committed performance as a Frankenstein-like woman who must learn to be human after an infant\u2019s brain is implanted in her head. It\u2019s the ultimate example of Lanthimos\u2019 willingness to commit to absurd premises and execute them with stunning precision. Unlike some of the Greek auteur\u2019s darker works, \u201cPoor Things\u201d follows its grotesque events to a darkly hopeful conclusion, making it the closest thing he has to an entry-level offering.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cI Am Frankelda\u201d (Streaming June 12)<\/p>\n

Netflix hasn\u2019t been shy about marketing \u201cI Am Frankelda\u201d as the first stop-motion animation film to emerge from Mexico. And even if that\u2019s a difficult claim to fully verify, there\u2019s no denying that it looks like a colorful delight. A prequel to the Cartoon Network series \u201cFrankelda\u2019s Book of Spooks,\u201d the film should appeal to both fans of the show and animation enthusiasts looking to dive into a handcrafted work of art.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d (Streaming June 13)<\/p>\n

It\u2019s rare that a film emerges from truly out of the blue and finds its way into the Oscar hunt \u2014 dedicated cinephiles who regularly scan the festival circuit and the release calendar usually have a decent picture of the race by early in the fall. But Craig Brewer\u2019s \u201cSong Sung Blue\u201d was a true dark horse, emerging late in the year and landing Kate Hudson an Oscar nomination for her delightful performance as Claire Sardina.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not hard to see why the film resonated so much. Hugh Jackman and Hudson are at their most charming in this real-life story of two Neil Diamond impersonators who navigate the hardships of surviving in the real world while clinging to the carefree world Diamond presents in his sentimental songs. It\u2019s a feel-good movie that even works if you don\u2019t like Neil Diamond, and should be at the top of your list if you missed it last year.<\/p>\n

\t\u201cDrinking Buddies\u201d (Streaming June 15)<\/p>\n

Joe Swanberg has been largely off the grid for the past decade, but he returned in top form with this year\u2019s SXSW premiere, \u201cThe Sun Never Sets.\u201d Whether that movie rekindled your interest in the indie director or you\u2019re still waiting to see it, Netflix is giving you a chance to revisit his last great film. \u201cDrinking Buddies\u201d increasingly feels like a product of a bygone era, with its craft beer subject matter evoking the hipster 2010s in which it was made.
