{"id":471119,"date":"2026-06-11T00:22:11","date_gmt":"2026-06-11T00:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/471119\/"},"modified":"2026-06-11T00:22:11","modified_gmt":"2026-06-11T00:22:11","slug":"life-after-death-from-burned-trees-to-bleached-corals-how-dead-organisms-live-on-as-the-building-blocks-of-new-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/471119\/","title":{"rendered":"Life after death: From burned trees to bleached corals, how dead organisms live on as the building blocks of new life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>People\u2019s knee-jerk reaction to seeing death in nature is often not positive. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/climate-lab\/a-fire-charred-this-research-forest-what-happened-next-dazzled\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The burn scar<\/a> left by wildfire on a once-forested hillside, or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aims.gov.au\/research-topics\/environmental-issues\/coral-bleaching\/coral-bleaching-events\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ghostly white coral reef<\/a>, may evoke tragedy and despair. But in nature, most plants and animals are recycled back into new life.<\/p>\n<p>The fallen branches and leaves that crunch under your boots as you step on the forest floor are providing nutrients for new growth as they decompose. Empty shells can become the foundations for new sea life to grow. Dead organic matter left over after a harvest supports soils and the production of food that feeds people worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>These remnants of life can set both the pace and outcome of ecosystem recovery, enabling life to persist and thrive, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aef9983\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">or preventing it from doing so<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=u2t6_-oAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ecologists<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/citations?user=mUZwSZcAAAAJ&amp;hl=en&amp;oi=ao\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">like us<\/a>, refer to this as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/fee.1311\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ecological memory<\/a>, where remnants of the past influence how ecosystems look and behave in the present. Similar to human memories, traumatic events can have the strongest influences in nature: Fires, storms, heat waves and outbreaks of pests or disease can cause widespread death of plants and animals, leaving behind abundant and lasting physical remains.<\/p>\n<p>In a new paper published in Science Advances, working with colleagues around the country, we show how <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aef9983\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">death plays nuanced and powerful roles in nature\u2019s afterlife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In some cases, dead organisms <a href=\"http:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/ecy.4006\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prevent life from returning<\/a> after an extreme event. In other cases, they make ecosystems more resilient by <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1908597117\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fueling regeneration of new life<\/a> and hastening recovery. Understanding this afterlife and its influence on ecosystems will be increasingly valuable for helping ecosystems recover in a changing climate.<\/p>\n<p>Foundation species \u2013 nature\u2019s architects<\/p>\n<p>Our study focused on a set of ecologically important organisms, known as <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.isci.2019.02.020\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">foundation species<\/a>. These are abundant and iconic organisms, such as trees, grasses, oysters and corals, that create the natural infrastructure on which entire communities of organisms exist.<\/p>\n<p>Foundation species can be found everywhere, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/j.isci.2019.02.020\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">depths of the oceans to the summits of mountains<\/a>. Because they are so abundant while alive, they can remain abundant after they die. And their influence can carry on in an afterlife that shapes the trajectories of ecosystems, either supporting recovery to the ecosystem\u2019s original structure or transforming it into a new one.<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/737923\/original\/file-20260525-83-mat2au.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Trees of different ages grow from a fallen log.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260525-83-mat2au.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              A fallen log serves as a nursery for a new hemlock tree in British Columbia, Canada, hence the nicknames nursery log or nurse log. Seeds often struggle to establish themselves on the ground, but decaying trees provide soft, nutrient-rich environments with less competition or risk from soil fungus.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Nursery_Log_at_Schooner_Trail.jpg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Wing-Chi Poon<\/a>, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-SA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>To investigate how the dead remains of foundation species affect the ability of their living counterparts to establish, grow and survive, we tapped into a U.S. National Science Foundation <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">network of Long Term Ecological Research<\/a>. Scientists at these sites track populations of foundation species across a diversity of ecosystems that have experienced different extreme events.<\/p>\n<p>We looked at <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/site\/moorea-coral-reef-lter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">coral reefs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/stories\/meandering-through-the-mangrove-forests-of-the-florida-coastal-everglades\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mangrove forests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/stories\/a-day-in-the-life-behind-the-scenes-on-sapelo-island\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">salt marshes<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/findings\/kelp-forests-are-surprisingly-resilient-to-unprecedented-warming\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">kelp forests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/site\/virginia-coast-reserve-lter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oyster reefs<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/site\/luquillo-lter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tropical rainforests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/stories\/burned-forest-bleached-reef-lter-sites-adapt-to-learn-from-disturbance\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">temperate rainforests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/findings\/hemlock-is-a-foundation-species\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">hemlock forests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/site\/konza-prairie-lter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tallgrass prairies<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/site\/bonanza-creek-lter\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">boreal forests<\/a>, ranging from the tropics to just shy of the Arctic Circle.<\/p>\n<p>We found that, following extreme events, the dead affect the living more commonly than we expected. The dead foundation species either significantly increased or decreased living foundation species in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1126\/sciadv.aef9983\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nine out of the 10 ecosystems<\/a> we studied \u2013 the kelp forest was the only exception.<\/p>\n<p>In roughly half of the cases, dead foundation species hampered the ability of their living counterparts to reestablish, grow and survive after extreme events.<\/p>\n<p>Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1093\/ee\/nvw155\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">tropical montane rainforest of Puerto Rico<\/a>. This ecosystem is periodically walloped by hurricanes that <a href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/findings\/hurricane-frequency-impacts-forest-biodiversity-and-ecosystem-function\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">strip its canopy and blanket the forest floor<\/a> with tree branches and leaves. This layer of debris chokes off sunlight needed by the seedlings below and reduces the number that emerge to replace the trees lost during the storm, ultimately slowing the forest\u2019s recovery.<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/738728\/original\/file-20260528-69-5x1sxp.png?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260528-69-5x1sxp.png\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Kai Kopecky clears dead coral skeletons from a research site.<br \/>\n              Lauren Enright<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/ecy.4006\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">South Pacific coral reefs of Moorea<\/a> present a more extreme example. Marine heat waves that cause coral bleaching can transform these reefs into something fundamentally different: <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/eap.70077\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ghost towns of dead skeletons overgrown by seaweeds<\/a>. The nooks and crannies of the standing coral skeletons provide an opportunity for the seaweeds, which compete with coral for reef space, <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1111\/gcb.17504\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to proliferate and take over the reef<\/a>, preventing the return of corals.<\/p>\n<p>But in the other cases we studied, we found that dead organisms actually promote the regeneration of their living counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1073\/pnas.1908597117\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mangrove forests of the Florida Everglades<\/a> actually benefit from storm-generated debris. During a hurricane, leaf litter blown or washed out of the canopy ended up in the complex network of roots below, providing a pulse of nutrients that enhanced the production of new roots and hastened mangrove recovery.<\/p>\n<p>            <img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Mangroves put down roots in a coastal area.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260525-57-mr1loq.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>              When mangroves are torn up by storms, they can rebuild on top of one another. The recovery can take years, so frequent storms make recovery slower.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/lternet.edu\/stories\/meandering-through-the-mangrove-forests-of-the-florida-coastal-everglades\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tommy Shannon\/Florida Coastal Everglades LTER<\/a>, <a class=\"license\" href=\"http:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-sa\/4.0\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CC BY-SA<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the Eastern hemlock forests of New England, an <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1046\/j.1365-2699.2002.00765.x\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">outbreak of a tree-killing pest<\/a> \u2013 the woolly adelgid \u2013 left behind wide swaths of standing dead trees. But unlike the dead skeletons on a bleached reef, these dead trees often help new hemlock saplings grow by maintaining a favorable climate on the ground below.<\/p>\n<p>The question now is, how can humanity use this information to fortify the resilience of ecosystems after extreme events?<\/p>\n<p>How humans can help<\/p>\n<p>As humans, many of us rely on therapy to help manage how traumatic memories affect our lives. We can also help ecosystems manage the remnants of dead organisms after disasters in several ways.<\/p>\n<p>On land, standing dead trees are sometimes felled to create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/emergencemagazine.org\/conversation\/the-scaffolding-of-life\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nurse logs<\/a>,\u201d which release nutrients that nourish living trees. Dead grass litter is removed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k-state.edu\/news\/articles\/2026\/05\/konza-prairie-prescribed-burn-research.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using prescribed burning<\/a> to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.k-state.edu\/news\/articles\/2026\/05\/konza-prairie-prescribed-burn-research.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">better conditions for new grass to grow<\/a>. On the coasts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fisheries.noaa.gov\/feature-story\/gulf-coast-oyster-shell-recycling-key-sustainable-seafood-and-coastal-protection\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">dead oyster shells are deposited onto mud flats<\/a>, and the rubble of coral skeletons is either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbrbiology.com\/2022\/05\/30\/coral-rubble-stabilisation\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stabilized<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/eap.70077\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">removed<\/a> to create more solid substrates where new oysters and corals can settle, grow and thrive.<\/p>\n<p>            <a href=\"https:\/\/images.theconversation.com\/files\/738692\/original\/file-20260528-85-a68nxi.jpg?ixlib=rb-4.1.0&amp;q=45&amp;auto=format&amp;w=1000&amp;fit=clip\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Workers on a barge with mounds of oyster shells push them into the water with a hose.\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/file-20260528-85-a68nxi.jpg\" class=\"native-lazy\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>              Workers aboard a barge laden with 680 bushels of clam and oyster shells use high-pressure hoses to blast them into the Mullica River in Port Republic, N.J. The shells are collected from restaurants in Atlantic City, dried and placed into the river, where they become the foundation for new oyster colonies as free-floating baby oysters attach to them and start to grow.<br \/>\n              <a class=\"source\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ap.org\/detail\/Restaurants-OysterRestoration\/138b041264884647af9f74e56beffd4d\/photo\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">AP Photo\/Wayne Parry<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As rising temperatures create more frequent extreme events and trigger more die-offs, dead foundation species will be useful to help guide ecosystem recoveries afterward.<\/p>\n<p>Where there is life, there is death<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re in nature, whether hiking in a forest or snorkeling on a tropical reef, your attention is typically drawn to the life that exists in these places. But if you take a closer look, you may notice that death is all around, too.<\/p>\n<p>Death is an integral part of life. The quicker we all learn to embrace its capacity to be a transformative force, and find ways to use the remnants left in its wake, the better we will be able to help nature and ourselves thrive into the future.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"People\u2019s knee-jerk reaction to seeing death in nature is often not positive.
