David Boreanaz<\/a> is going to continue his impressive streak of leading shows with the news that a new pilot starring the Bones<\/a> leading man has been picked up to series. The new show, which revives a classic and much-beloved detective series of the 1970s, will debut early next year on NBC.<\/p>\n

According to reports<\/a>, the reboot of The Rockford Files<\/a>, which has had Boreanaz attached for a while, has been added to NBC’s winter schedule for January 2027. Boreanaz will be playing Jim Rockford, a recent parolee who \u2014 you’ll never believe it \u2014 was sent to prison for a crime he didn’t commit! But now he’s back in LA as a private investigator, trying to right wrongs, put his life back together and move on, only to find himself caught between law enforcement and organized crime. The series will also feature Michaela McManus<\/a> (9-1-1: Lone Star) as Kate, an LAPD detective who was romantically involved with Rockford until he blamed other cops for framing him; Jacki Weaver<\/a> (Silver Linings Playbook) as Rockford’s trailer-park neighbor who loves activism; and Felix Solis (The Rookie) as Nitty, a defense attorney who’s also Rockford’s best friend.<\/p>\n

The original series was created by Roy Huggins (Maverick) and Stephen J. Cannell (The A-Team), and was an early showcase for the writing of future Sopranos creator David Chase<\/a>. This iteration of The Rockford Files is created by Mike Daniels (Ponies<\/a>, Sons of Anarchy). It will be produced by Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly for Universal Television. Its pilot will be directed by Greg Mottola<\/a> (Superbad).<\/p>\n

How Successful was ‘The Rockford Files’?<\/p>\n

The Rockford Files was definitely successful, though more in the \u201cbeloved, award-winning, long-lasting TV classic\u201d way. Its first full season ranked No. 12 for the 1974\u201375 TV season, which is a proper hit. After that, it slipped down the rankings \u2014 No. 32, then No. 41, then No. 43, then No. 58 \u2014 but it still ran for six seasons and 123 episodes on NBC from 1974 to 1980, which is a major achievement for any network drama. But in terms of awards, this is where it went really well, because The Rockford Files won five Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series in 1978, and original star James Garner won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1977.<\/p>\n
