Its first full season ranked No. 12 for the 1974–75 TV season, which is a proper hit. After that, it slipped down the rankings — No. 32, then No. 41, then No. 43, then No. 58 — but it still ran for six seasons and 123 episodes on NBC from 1974 to 1980, which is a major achievement for any network drama. But in terms of awards, this is where it went really well, because The Rockford Files won five Primetime Emmys, including Outstanding Drama Series in 1978, and original star James Garner won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 1977.

The Rockford Files has been ordered to series at NBC and is expected to debut in January 2027, although no premiere date has yet been announced.
