The New Zealand Defence Force later confirmed the chemical detected was aluminium, with a routine sample taken from the water treatment plant yesterday returning a concentration of 4.058mg/L.

The amount is more than four times the maximum allowable value of 1mg/L under New Zealand’s Drinking Water Standards.

The contamination appears to have been caused by a power outage on June 9 and 10, which affected the treatment plant controls for dosing of the treatment additive polyaluminium chloride, the NZDF said.

“We are now flushing the plant and sending samples to the lab. We will advise when water quality has returned to normal.”

Ruapehu District Council and the NZDF have purchased supplies of bottled water, with five-litre containers being delivered to the Waiouru military base.

Tankers are also set up at the Waiouru Z station and the primary school to distribute drinking water.

Those with health concerns are advised to contact their doctors or Healthline on 0800 611 116.

The notice will remain in place until further notice.
