Steven Spielberg<\/a> has had such a prolific career that, when people attempt to associate him with one genre, it’s a nearly impossible task. His latest movie, Disclosure Day, is firmly rooted in the world of sci-fi, but the nature of the premise is also heavily inspired by conspiracy thrillers. This is far from his first sci-fi outing, however, as early works like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial are both largely regarded as masterpieces. In this century, though, he also delivered impressive sci-fi adventures with Minority Report and War of the Worlds.<\/p>\n

Tom Cruise teamed up with Spielberg for the aforementioned movies, with Minority Report taking place in a future world where violent crimes could be predicted and stopped<\/a>, as War of the Worlds was an update on the H.G. Wells story. While both of those movies were major successes, due in large part to the talent on screen and behind the camera, they marked the only time the Hollywood powerhouses collaborated.<\/p>\n

In support of Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, Cruise took to social media<\/a> to share a photo of himself at a screening. Making the image all the more exciting is that he posed with his Minority Report co-star Colin Farrell and his War of the Worlds co-star Dakota Fanning. Spielberg himself even had a quasi-cameo in the image, as Cruise held a popcorn bucket that was a bust of the filmmaker.<\/p>\n

“Nothing better than a summer Spielberg movie night<\/a> in a packed theater with friends! Steven thank you for all of the hours of joy that you have given us in the cinema!! It has been a great honor and pleasure to have worked with you and to call you my friend,” Cruise captioned the image. “Congratulations to my dear friend Emily [Blunt] and the entire group of artists that created this movie. You were superb. We all loved Disclosure Day!!”<\/p>\n

Given that both Spielberg and Cruise are known to regularly collaborate with actors and filmmakers repeatedly, many have wondered why the duo hasn’t worked together since the 2000s. In support of War of the Worlds, Cruise made a now-infamous appearance on Oprah Winfrey’s talk show in which he discussed his then-relationship with Katie Holmes. The interview is one of the earliest cases of YouTube helping make something go viral, as his enthusiasm was captured and circulated in edited videos, highlighting a seeming mania from Cruise. Additionally, Cruise’s connections to the Church of Scientology were a regular topic of discussion in the 2000s, with some rumors claiming Spielberg was frustrated that Cruise’s viral interview and frequent discussion of Scientology distracted audiences from War of the Worlds.<\/p>\n

Others claim that it was merely that the pair shifted their focuses in subsequent years. Cruise would continue to lean into bombastic experiences, like the Mission: Impossible series, while Spielberg focused on historical dramas like War Horse, Lincoln, and Bridge of Spies.<\/p>\n

Whatever reasons there might be for why the pair haven’t worked together, Cruise clearly continues to admire Spielberg<\/a> and the impact he has had on cinema.<\/p>\n
