{"id":475561,"date":"2026-06-13T15:36:25","date_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/475561\/"},"modified":"2026-06-13T15:36:25","modified_gmt":"2026-06-13T15:36:25","slug":"the-critical-robot-arm-on-the-iss-isnt-working-properly-but-nasa-has-a-plan-to-fix-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/nz\/475561\/","title":{"rendered":"The critical robot arm on the ISS isn&#8217;t working properly, but NASA has a plan to fix it"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-f6db3340-b347-4f06-9799-6f4f57a79afc\">One of the space station&#8217;s robot arms, crucial for catching cargo ships and doing a share of maintenance duties, is offline for at least a few weeks for repairs.<\/p>\n<p>Canadarm2, which just passed 25 years of service in April on the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/missions\/international-space-station\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">International Space Station<\/a> (ISS), will require a spacewalk to fix an apparently broken part that seized up during routine work on May 27, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/38700-nasa-history.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA<\/a> said in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/spacestation\/2026\/06\/10\/expedition-74-works-scientific-installs-suit-prep-ahead-of-canadarm2-repair-spacewalk\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/blogs\/spacestation\/2026\/06\/10\/expedition-74-works-scientific-installs-suit-prep-ahead-of-canadarm2-repair-spacewalk\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">blog post<\/a> Wednesday (June 10).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-f6db3340-b347-4f06-9799-6f4f57a79afc-2\">The arm is in a stable spot, but it is awaiting help from spacewalking astronauts on June 30 \u2014 the day before Canada Day, a national holiday in that country. &#8220;The system demonstrated an elevated motor current in a wrist joint, and arm motion did not occur as expected,&#8221; NASA officials wrote of the issue. Consultation with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22534-canadian-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canadian Space Agency<\/a> (CSA), which funds the arm and supports its operations with MDA Space, showed a spacewalk will be needed to replace the affected joint. Luckily, a spare is already on station.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-b1842151-7386-4e6a-8ab6-dba2d729c9f0\">&#8220;Canadarm2 was designed with these kinds of potential issues in mind: it is made up of several segments that can be pulled out and replaced in space,&#8221; the CSA wrote in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/news\/articles\/2026\/2026-06-10-joint-issue-on-canadarm2.asp\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/news\/articles\/2026\/2026-06-10-joint-issue-on-canadarm2.asp\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a Wednesday update<\/a> on its website. &#8220;Knowing that parts would eventually have to be replaced, the CSA planned shipments of key spares to the station well in advance. In 2017, a similar repair happened with one of the robotic arm&#8217;s &#8216;hands&#8217; after it started to show signs of normal wear and tear.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NASA plans a news conference at a to-be-announced date to discuss the spacewalk and to share more about the assigned spacewalkers. The two astronauts will likely be drawn from the Expedition 74 crew on the U.S. side of the station, which include NASA&#8217;s Chris Williams, Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway, and the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s Sophie Adenot.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Getting Canadarm2 back online will be critical to berth some cargo ships at the space station, which carry food, equipment and other supplies to the astronauts, as well as to perform a share of maintenance on the orbiting complex. Controllers in Canada alone support <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/blog\/2021\/04\/28\/canadarm2-20-years-of-canadian-space-robotics-on-the-iss.asp\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.asc-csa.gc.ca\/eng\/blog\/2021\/04\/28\/canadarm2-20-years-of-canadian-space-robotics-on-the-iss.asp\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">more than 100 days of work<\/a> a year for Canadarm2 and other Canadian ISS robotics (including the Dextre &#8220;hand&#8221;), which includes picking up equipment, transferring experiments, and performing other duties that don&#8217;t require precious astronaut time.<\/p>\n<p>The CSA&#8217;s robotics on station represent its share of the ISS funding arrangement, allowing CSA astronauts and science to fly.
