No jackpot jingle scientifically engineered to trigger the same emotional response as Pavlov’s dog hearing a dinner bell. No complicated rules and conditions hidden in tiny writing at the bottom of the screen.

Just rows of meat trays sitting on the bar wrapped in enough Glad Wrap that any winner will require a chainsaw to access their sausages.

And the simplicity only makes it more exciting.

Because once those trays go on display, something changes in people; the room shifts.

Conversations that moments earlier were about rugby, politics, weather or whether the council had “completely lost the plot” suddenly become entirely focused on processed meat valuation.

People begin analysing trays with surprising seriousness.

“Tray four’s got decent bacon.”

“Not bad snarlers in number seven.”

“Bit weak through the mince section.”

Old blokes stand there studying the selections like judges at the A&P Show, quietly assessing sausage quality with the concentration usually reserved for livestock auctions and All Blacks selections.

And there is always one tray nobody really wants.

Usually containing cuts where it’s not mutton dressed as lamb, rather it has offal you’d normally only find in French cuisine dressed up as mutton.

Yet if that same tray is won, the winner will carry it back to their table like they’ve just secured Olympic gold for New Zealand.

And perhaps no moment captures the spirit of the meat raffle better than the winner’s walk.

I say walk, but in reality, it is more of a swagger.

It’s a hard walk to get right, because most people are unsure how much celebration is too much celebration after winning mince, so most settle somewhere between humble embarrassment and quiet triumph.

There’s usually a small smile they’re trying not to show too much. Maybe a subtle nod to nearby tables. A lifting of the tray just high enough to acknowledge the achievement without appearing arrogant about sausages.

Or you could go the other way entirely and hold your plastic-wrapped meat tray aloft like the Ranfurly Shield, quietly expecting applause from the gathered masses, maybe even the request for an autograph or two.

Of course, no meat raffle exists without one of the true giants of Kiwi community life. The ticket seller.

Usually appearing halfway through your conversation carrying books of raffle tickets and a metal cash tin, they move through the room with the calm confidence of somebody who knows resistance is pointless.

“You’ve gotta be in to win.”

And they’re absolutely right.

Nobody in New Zealand has ever successfully made eye contact with a meat raffle seller and escaped without buying at least one ticket.

The social pressure arrives immediately.
