Kober (NASA\/Catholic University of America))<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4f13618e-e708-46d3-8e89-8ce39623dc81\">The Hubble Space Telescope has captured a striking image of an irregular dwarf galaxy.<\/p>\n<p>And while this galaxy might be faint and far away, it certainly takes the spotlight in this spectacular new image.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-3da7a8be-c3d1-4322-9677-e19a13fbfa32\"\/>What is it?<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-3610ac3d-9377-437b-b5c1-3ac7835a9c91-0\">23 million light-years away from Earth lies the irregular dwarf galaxy ESO 490-017. Being a dwarf galaxy, it&#8217;s only about 12,000 light-years across. The use of &#8220;only&#8221; here might sound strange. After all, one light-year is 5.88 trillion miles (9.46 trillion km). However, while 12,000 light-years is &#8230; a lot &#8230; our own Milky Way galaxy is at least 100,000 light-years across.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/hubble\/hubble-spies-faint-irregular-galaxy\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/missions\/hubble\/hubble-spies-faint-irregular-galaxy\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In this image <\/a>from the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15892-hubble-space-telescope.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hubble Space Telescope<\/a>, we can see the faint galaxy speckled with stars with a spectacular bright star at the photo&#8217;s center.<\/p>\n<p>The galaxy has low surface brightness, so the stars in the image&#8217;s background appear faint and almost hazy. This makes the foreground stars stand out even more, with beaming diffraction spikes emanating outward.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>Hidden in the background of this photo is more than just fuzzy stars, however. The red, orange, and even beige spots in the cosmic backdrop of this image aren&#8217;t just colorful stellar bodies, but rather other galaxies scattered throughout space.<\/p>\n<p>The primary galaxy imaged is found in the constellation <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canis-major-big-dog-of-winter-spring-skywatching.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canis-major-big-dog-of-winter-spring-skywatching.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/canis-major-big-dog-of-winter-spring-skywatching.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Canis Major<\/a>, which contains Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-64b01354-e332-4179-8f8e-ce254b43eef2\"\/>Why is it incredible?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ab7d46b5-63c2-4bfa-856e-77573eb63d15\">This image was captured as part of a Hubble observing program studying galaxies and galaxy clusters as well as how they move throughout the universe. While you might think of galaxies as these stoic, far-reaching cosmic structures, they&#8217;re really constantly on the move.<\/p>\n<p>This image is just one piece of a larger collection of data that scientists have captured with Hubble to better understand the &#8220;cosmic flow&#8221; of galaxies and other massive structures in the universe.<\/p>\n<p>This image also shows off Hubble&#8217;s power. While this galaxy is very far away and fairly faint, the portrait captures it clearly, highlighting the galaxy, its stars, and even other galaxies all in one fantastic view.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The dwarf irregular galaxy ESO 490-017.
