Banner said the club was a key destination on Pilot Bay, and strengthening one of the area\u2019s most iconic community assets would create benefits beyond the club itself. <\/p>\n
\u201cMore activity around the club creates more reasons for people to spend time at the beach, walk through Mainstreet, visit local businesses and enjoy everything the Mount has to offer.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the project demonstrated confidence in the future of Mount Maunganui.<\/p>\n

Bay of Plenty MP Tom Rutherford said the redevelopment was a welcome upgrade for the venue that held an important place in the community. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe Mount Ocean Sports Club is a real jewel in our crown of Mount Maunganui and really well loved by so many members, not just of Mount Maunganui but of Tauranga.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said he had seen the plans and praised the club members and the committee for bringing the project together. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis upgrade is well-needed and I\u2019m really excited about it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Rutherford, who is a club member, said the venue was about more than sport and socialising. <\/p>\n
\u201cMy wife and I are members of the sports club and we love going there. It\u2019s a great social environment and, to the club\u2019s credit, they do amazing work for our community.\u201d<\/p>\n
He pointed to recent fundraising events held at the club, including a Breast Cancer Foundation high tea and another that raised $50,000 for Waipuna Hospice. <\/p>\n

Tauranga City Council general manager of operations and infrastructure Reneke van Soest said a building consent for the redevelopment was issued on November 21, 2025.<\/p>\n
The council approved the temporary occupation of a small section of the Pilot Bay reserve in front of the building for construction-related activities between June and December 2026. <\/p>\n
This will allow for scaffolding, a gantry over the footpath and the temporary use of two car parks for skip storage.<\/p>\n
Van Soest said public access to both the reserve and parking area would be maintained throughout construction. <\/p>\n
