I originally made everything here – and still try to make as much as I possibly can here. But there is quite a generational gap in the owners and makers that we have, and the people coming through and what they want to do.

The wider change I’d like to see is the awareness of what skills are needed, where the jobs are and what the opportunities are. Naturally – and fair enough, I can’t be hypocritical because I am a designer – everyone comes out of studying wanting to be a designer… but there are crucial roles where there are bigger gaps in our industry. Those really practical skills that we need to bring it together.

Three labels I’m excited about are… Harris Tapper, Rebe and Wynn Hamlyn.

My fashion hero is… Myself – I think what I’ve done, and how I’ve achieved it is how I’ve always dreamt it to be.

Photo / Hope Patterson

In one word New Zealand fashion right now is… Slow.

It’s both positive and negative. People care a lot more about sustainability – we don’t have a lot of brands that do fast fashion and that’s really important.

But I’ve also been talking to pattern makers, factories and small ateliers and they have not been getting work. A lot of brands are moving things overseas. I think we need more young people to learn the skills of pattern-making, sewing. I just want to see that skill set carry on.

At some point, it was thriving – Made In New Zealand was very important. How do we bring work back to New Zealand? A really hard part is to recognise when you’re taking on too much. What we’ve started to do is hire incredible people that are specialised – we’re at the size now where we can do that. A lot of designers are eternally optimistic. I’m feeling hopeful.

It would also be cool to see a focus on how we could get more export with a lot of our fashion brands. There’s a big focus on sectors or industries that are the obvious ones, but I’d love to see a collaborative effort [and] some backing behind that, or some ways that could make that process easier and more streamlined. We’ve got a relatively small market in global comparison, but it would be great to make that process easier for brands to get into those offshore markets.

Three labels I’m excited about are… Rory William Docherty, Dominique Healy and Penny Sage.

My local fashion hero is… Andreas Mikellis of Skrimshand.

Dominique Healy

The Grey Lynn-based designer excels in relaxed, contemporary everyday dress, which will be showcased within The Studio.

In one word New Zealand fashion right now is… Changing.

The old style of selling wholesale and doing everything well in advance, I think a lot of people are shifting and doing things a bit closer.
