A father and son have appeared in court after $224.25 million worth of methamphetamine was painted into the walls of a container in Sydney.

An investigation was launched earlier this month after Australian Border Force officers intercepted a targeted consignment from Mexico. After Border Force detector dogs indicated narcotics, the matter was referred to the Australian Federal Police.

Police said investigators took apart the container and identified “a layer of methamphetamine infused within the internal paintwork of the container”.

In total, more than 200kg of methamphetamine with an estimated street value of AU$185 million (NZ$224.25 million) was embedded in the walls, police said.

On Monday, police carried out a search of a property in Sydney’s Box Hill, believed to be occupied by the intended recipients of the shipment.

“Police located and seized electronic devices and other industrial equipment which was to allegedly be used in the extraction of methamphetamine.”

Three Mexican nationals, including a father and son, and a 25-year-old woman were arrested.

The men, aged 25 and 49, appeared in court on Tuesday charged with one count of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border controlled drug.

The offence carried a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The woman was released pending further inquiries.

Australian Federal Police Detective Acting Superintendent Trevor Robinson praised the investigators for their work on identifying criminal networks.

“Criminal syndicates like to think they have outsmarted law enforcement by impregnating drugs in unique ways, but this seizure highlights that isn’t the case,” he said.

“This investigation has prevented millions of dollars of drug profit flowing back into the syndicate to fund their next criminal venture.”

Australian Border Force Superintendent Jared Leighton said the concealment method demonstrated the lengths organised syndicates go to avoid the law.

“Detailed examination of cargo is critical to protecting the border, and our officers are highly skilled in identifying anomalies in even the most elaborate concealments,” Leighton said.

A father and son have appeared in court after $224.25 million worth of methamphetamine was painted into the…

[3
85,67,42,43,40,38,41,39
post-481524","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-headlines","tag-australia","tag-crime-and-justice","tag-headlines","tag-news","tag-top-news","tag-top-stories","tag-topnews","tag-topstories
["GET
