A participant described the incident as \u201cjust a casual weekend with some mates\u201d at the local skid spot affectionately known as \u201cDeadly Hedley\u201d – Hedley Pl, a residential street in Raumanga. <\/p>\n
He said despite the man\u2019s failure to hold on to the ute tray, he was not seriously injured.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe got up, walked away from it with just a buggered back and scrapes down the arm.\u201d<\/p>\n
The participant acknowledged the risks involved, but said there has never been a \u201cmajor crash\u201d or \u201cinjury\u201d linked to skids at the popular street.<\/p>\n
Skids, also known as doughnuts, involve a driver deliberately causing a vehicle\u2019s tyres to lose traction while driving in tight circles.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s illegal to perform skids on public roads in New Zealand, and drivers face fines, vehicle impoundment and charges for sustained loss of traction.<\/p>\n
The participant said skid penalties were out of proportion to the offence.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t see why \u2018skids\u2019 are made out to be the worst thing people can do as a group. <\/p>\n
\u201cThe skid cars when caught get impounded, pink stickered and you go to court and most likely lose the licence for 12 months.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you get caught drink driving, you get someone to grab the car for you, you go to court and can get community service. The justice system doesn\u2019t make sense when you compare the two.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said the group tries to keep the area tidy, always removing the debris from the road, and have developed a strong sense of camaraderie.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Whang\u0101rei skid community gives me a feeling of \u2018family\u2019 and the love shared between us all is unmatched.<\/p>\n
\u201cSort of like how people like to drink on a Friday just because it\u2019s a Friday, we go for a skid on a Friday because it\u2019s a Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n
The footage prompted a wave of reaction online, with many commenters treating the incident light-heartedly.<\/p>\n

Another person joked the man had received an impromptu schooling in the laws of motion.<\/p>\n

However, not everyone sees skids as harmless fun. <\/p>\n
