(Image credit: CSU\/CIRA &amp; NOAA)<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-4f13618e-e708-46d3-8e89-8ce39623dc81\">On Sunday (June 14), the Hawaiian volcano K\u012blauea erupted for the 49th time that we know of \u2014 marking its 49th &#8220;episode,&#8221; as scientists say.<\/p>\n<p>And during the show, the GOES-18 weather <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24839-satellites.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">satellite<\/a> caught the action: the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-volcanoes\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-volcanoes\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-volcanoes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">volcano<\/a> blasting lava about 700 feet (210 meters) into the air. That color indicates warm to hot fire, per the scale visible at the bottom of the gif.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"\" class=\"max-h-12 w-auto\" aria-hidden=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The gif itself is also sped up, showcasing a timespan from 3:01 p.m. EDT (1901 UTC) on Sunday to 10:31 p.m. EDT the same day (0331 UTC the following day).<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-64b01354-e332-4179-8f8e-ce254b43eef2\"\/>Why is it noteworthy?<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-ab7d46b5-63c2-4bfa-856e-77573eb63d15\">It&#8217;s a treat to witness Hawaii&#8217;s K\u012blauea volcano erupting for many reasons, one being its grandeur. It&#8217;s considered the most active volcano on Earth, having <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/exhibitions\/permanent\/planet-earth\/why-are-there-ocean-basins-continents-and-mountains\/non-explosive-volcanism\/kilauea-volcano-hawaii\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.amnh.org\/exhibitions\/permanent\/planet-earth\/why-are-there-ocean-basins-continents-and-mountains\/non-explosive-volcanism\/kilauea-volcano-hawaii\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">consistently erupted<\/a> for the last 200 years or so.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s also huge, with a 4,090-foot (1,250-meter) summit that has a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Kilauea\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/place\/Kilauea\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">depression<\/a> about 3 miles (5 kilometers) long and 2 miles (3.2 km) wide. This very large depression is what&#8217;s known as a &#8220;caldera.&#8221; You can think of it as a huge crater on the volcano&#8217;s summit.<\/p>\n<p>That crater is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/learn\/nature\/kilauea.htm\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/havo\/learn\/nature\/kilauea.htm\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">called<\/a> Halema&#8217;uma&#8217;u, and is in fact where the eruptions of this volcano originate. This particular eruption lasted about seven and a half hours, according to the U.S. Geological Survey&#8217;s Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, but no lava was reported exiting the caldera territory. In conjunction with the eruption, however, the USGS <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/hans-public\/notice\/DOI-USGS-HVO-2026-06-16T18:04:34+00:00#:~:text=Re%2Dinflation%20indicates%20another%20episode,that%20another%20episode%20is%20likely.\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/hans-public\/notice\/DOI-USGS-HVO-2026-06-16T18:04:34+00:00#:~:text=Re%2Dinflation%20indicates%20another%20episode,that%20another%20episode%20is%20likely.\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">reported<\/a> three earthquakes within K\u012blauea caldera.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/media\/img\/spc-logo-w.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\" data-component-name=\"Image\"\/><\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">K\u012blauea eruption episode 49 summary \ud83c\udf0b Episode 49 lava fountaining began after approximately 5 hours of precursory lava overflows from the north vent that started at 4:10 a.m. HST on the morning of June 14. Satellite imagery of natural disasters in particular can help scientists monitor the status of hazardous areas in order to aid relief efforts, if needed.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s going to be especially important as human-driven <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/what-is-climate-change-explained\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">climate change<\/a>, caused by practices like burning coal for cheap power, continues to grow in severity. Global warming is directly correlated with increases in serious disasters like hurricanes, cyclones and wildfires. The more satellite eyes we have on these events, the better.<\/p>\n<p>There are other benefits to satellite images as well \u2014 things like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/earth\/satellites-watch-worlds-largest-iceberg-on-crash-course-with-antarctic-penguin-island-photo-video\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/earth\/satellites-watch-worlds-largest-iceberg-on-crash-course-with-antarctic-penguin-island-photo-video\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/the-universe\/earth\/satellites-watch-worlds-largest-iceberg-on-crash-course-with-antarctic-penguin-island-photo-video\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">penguin safety<\/a> and solar <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/eclipses\/moon-blocks-satellite-views-of-the-sun-before-lunar-eclipse-space-photo-of-the-day-for-sept-9-2025\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/eclipses\/moon-blocks-satellite-views-of-the-sun-before-lunar-eclipse-space-photo-of-the-day-for-sept-9-2025\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/eclipses\/moon-blocks-satellite-views-of-the-sun-before-lunar-eclipse-space-photo-of-the-day-for-sept-9-2025\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">eclipse views<\/a>, for example. And some satellites are even able to watch over humanmade disasters, such as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-goes-boom-satellite-cameras-zoom-explosive-blue-origin-damage-is-visible-from-space\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-goes-boom-satellite-cameras-zoom-explosive-blue-origin-damage-is-visible-from-space\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-exploration\/launches-spacecraft\/rocket-goes-boom-satellite-cameras-zoom-explosive-blue-origin-damage-is-visible-from-space\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">this one <\/a>that caught Blue Origin&#8217;s rocket explosion from space.<\/p>\n<p>As for this erupting volcano, now that it&#8217;s quieted down, scientists have been trying to predict when the next outflow could occur. According to the USGS, the 50th episode is <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/hans-public\/notice\/DOI-USGS-HVO-2026-06-16T18:04:34+00:00#:~:text=Re%2Dinflation%20indicates%20another%20episode,that%20another%20episode%20is%20likely.\" data-url=\"https:\/\/volcanoes.usgs.gov\/hans-public\/notice\/DOI-USGS-HVO-2026-06-16T18:04:34+00:00#:~:text=Re%2Dinflation%20indicates%20another%20episode,that%20another%20episode%20is%20likely.\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">forecast<\/a> to occur &#8220;between June 24 and June 29 with June 25-26 most likely.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A still from a gif of the K\u012blauea volcano erupting.
