Construct and conjure a version of nationhood. Navigate strict Fifa rules. Give players a boost in their precision and fans a sense of pride (despite ruminations about the Fifa’s positioning).

This year, players from Aotearoa New Zealand wear black and white jerseys made by Puma. Each shirt nods to familiar motifs: the black jersey features unfurling ferns, while the white jersey is covered in illustrations of hau, the wind. Football NZ has said the design is inspired by te whānau puhi, the family of the four winds.

World Cup football jerseys are also closely watched for the stories of nationhood they tell. Fifa rules that jerseys, and any other team kit, must not “display political, religious, or personal messages or slogans of any nature in any language or form”. The application of these rules has seen plenty of action.

Days before the World Cup began, The Guardian reported that Fifa had rejected the Haitian jersey after deeming design aspects too political: it featured “an image depicting the Battle of Vertières [the final phase of the Haitian revolution against France in 1803] and some independence heroes raising the Haitian flag”. (Despite the ban, the jersey manufacturer Saeta has announced a re-stock due to its popularity among fans.)

Beyond ideological applications, there are also detailed instructions for the size of numbers, team emblems and player’s names.

It’s plenty for shirt designers to navigate. How do you embellish kit with features players and fans will connect to, without upsetting Fifa’s restrictive codes? How can you showcase traditions in tech-forward moisture-wicking fabrics? And how do you design a shirt that looks great for emotional spidercam close-ups, clearly marked for the players on the field and still legible from the back of the stands?

Some rely on nostalgia: see the vibrant yellow, green and blue Brazilian hues that reference the kit worn to win the 1970 cup. Others are bolder, trialling new colours, patterns or motifs.

Left: Virgil van Dijk, of Netherlands, celebrates a goal scored. Photo / Puma" class="responsively-lazy"/>Morocco’s World Cup kit. Photo / Puma

Morocco

Embellishments at the neck and sleeves of this bright red Moroccan jersey, designed by Puma, take inspiration from zellige, a mosiac tilework traditionally made from clay. The intricate embroidery is modelled after the craft, which is prominent in architecture.

Curaçao’s away jersey.

An away jersey often gives designers a little more room to play with markers of nationhood. This buttery yellow jersey features a cheerful, gentle hue not often adopted for sports uniform. It’s also neatly punctuated by colourful stripes across the shoulder. Adidas says it’s inspired by the colourful architecture of Curaçao’s capital, Willemstad.

Germany’s home jersey.

Germany

The home jersey worn by Germany’s team is modelled on shirts used by teams in the 1990s. The neat, slanted stripes resemble the nation’s flag, making it easily legible. Black hems also create the feeling of a finished silhouette for the Adidas shirt.

Kylian Mbappe, of France. Photo / Getty Images

France

French players are all buttoned up for this World Cup, with a Nike jersey that features a stark white collar lined with red. There’s a distinct neatness to this jersey, giving it plenty of dignity (also bolstered by the golden hue of their team mascot: the rooster).

Mexico’s home jersey.

Mexico

This jersey is so good, it even looks good on ducks (one has been photographed wearing one over its feathers on the streets of Mexico City). Adidas has taken inspiration from traditional Aztec markings. The symmetry and sizing is what creates such a powerful silhouette.

Portugal’s away jersey.

Portugal

Rolling, foamy waves are rendered on this dynamic Portugal away jersey, nodding to the Atlantic Ocean that surrounds the nation. It’s a playful design by Puma, with clear contrast to the home jersey which is a more traditional red. The triangular shape on the lower half also gives the shirt some strong, graphic definition.

Japan’s away jersey.

Japan

The colourful, thin and wavering stripes on Japan’s away shirt seem to be hand-traced – giving the jersey a tangibility not often available to footie jerseys. Further authority comes from the bold black and white stripes that line the neck and shoulders. The positioning of the flag at the nape of the neck is a nice touch too.

Federico Valverde, of Uruguay, during a qualifying match. Photo / Getty Images

Uruguay

Power up, says Nike for Uruguay’s away shirt. This geometric design has earned comparisons to superhero costuming, and it’s not difficult to see why.

Bangladesh’s World Cup kit.

Bangladesh

This away jersey was designed by Tasmit Afiyat Arny, the creative director of the Bangladesh Football Federation and founder of Stride Fashion Wear. The pattern over the shoulders is inspired by jamdani, a textile that has been produced for centuries in the city.

Scotland’s away jersey.

Scotland

Another surprising hue, this time from Adidas’ realisation for Scotland’s away shirt. The peachy orange jersey features purple stripes and hems at the sleeves.

Which jerseys inspire fanfare, despite strict regulations, at the Fifa World Cup 2026?
