Every World Cup, there are images of glory, defeat, protest and athletic action that circulate the world over. Each is punctuated with the jersey players wear.<\/p>\n

A good football jersey has plenty of work to do. Construct and conjure a version of nationhood. Navigate strict Fifa rules. Give players a boost in their precision and fans a sense of pride (despite ruminations about the Fifa\u2019s positioning<\/a>). <\/p>\n This year, players from Aotearoa New Zealand wear black and white jerseys made by Puma. Each shirt nods to familiar motifs: the black jersey features unfurling ferns, while the white jersey is covered in illustrations of hau, the wind. Football NZ has said the design is inspired by te wh\u0101nau puhi, the family of the four winds. <\/p>\n World Cup football jerseys are also closely watched for the stories of nationhood they tell. Fifa rules<\/a> that jerseys, and any other team kit, must not \u201cdisplay political, religious, or personal messages or slogans of any nature in any language or form\u201d. The application of these rules has seen plenty of action. <\/p>\n Days before the World Cup began, The Guardian reported<\/a> that Fifa had rejected the Haitian jersey after deeming design aspects too political: it featured \u201can image depicting the Battle of Verti\u00e8res [the final phase of the Haitian revolution against France in 1803] and some independence heroes raising the Haitian flag\u201d. (Despite the ban, the jersey manufacturer Saeta has announced a re-stock<\/a> due to its popularity among fans.) <\/p>\n Beyond ideological applications, there are also detailed instructions for the size of numbers, team emblems and player\u2019s names. <\/p>\n It\u2019s plenty for shirt designers to navigate. How do you embellish kit with features players and fans will connect to, without upsetting Fifa\u2019s restrictive codes? How can you showcase traditions in tech-forward moisture-wicking fabrics? And how do you design a shirt that looks great for emotional spidercam close-ups, clearly marked for the players on the field and still legible from the back of the stands?<\/p>\n Some rely on nostalgia: see the vibrant yellow, green and blue Brazilian hues that reference the kit worn to win the 1970 cup. Others are bolder, trialling new colours, patterns or motifs. <\/p>\n This year, there have been some failures: the hex-code of the Netherlands orange is so bright it\u2019s disrupting television displays, and the splattered neon green of Switzerland\u2019s away shirt is murky and unpleasant. <\/p>\n But enough of the negatives; here are the jerseys we think are making the biggest impact at the Fifa World Cup 2026. <\/p>\n Morocco <\/p>\n Embellishments at the neck and sleeves of this bright red Moroccan jersey, designed by Puma, take inspiration from zellige, a mosiac tilework traditionally made from clay. The intricate embroidery is modelled after the craft, which is prominent in architecture.<\/p>\n An away jersey often gives designers a little more room to play with markers of nationhood. This buttery yellow jersey features a cheerful, gentle hue not often adopted for sports uniform. It\u2019s also neatly punctuated by colourful stripes across the shoulder. Adidas says it\u2019s inspired by the colourful architecture of Cura\u00e7ao\u2019s capital, Willemstad. <\/p>\n Germany <\/p>\n The home jersey worn by Germany\u2019s team is modelled on shirts used by teams in the 1990s. The neat, slanted stripes resemble the nation\u2019s flag, making it easily legible. Black hems also create the feeling of a finished silhouette for the Adidas shirt. <\/p>\n France <\/p>\n French players are all buttoned up for this World Cup, with a Nike jersey that features a stark white collar lined with red.
